OAKLEY INDEPENDENCE DAY OAKLEY CITY, UTAH
Lefty Holman splits win while thinking of his grandmother As a Rose TOP SCORES
ALL-AROUND COWBOY J. Brinkerhoff
BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI T he last year hasn’t been the easiest one for Lefty Holman. The saddle bronc rider from Visalia, Calif., saw his 2019 season end prematurely due to a knee injury. Then COVID-19 hit, and during that, Holman lost his grandmother, Sally Marvel, to cancer. Marvel, the sister of 1978World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Joe Marvel, loved roses. Because of it, Holman wears a rose on his shirt sleeves. So when Holman drew Bar T Rodeo’s Painted Rose at the Oakley Independence Day Rodeo in Oakley City, Utah, over Fourth of July weekend, Holman had a smile, even if he didn’t know much about the horse. Holman and Painted Rose combined for an 87-point ride to split the win in Oakley City with Isaac Diaz, who posted his ride aboard Bar T Rodeo’s Bitter Dan. “It was a pretty special win for me,” Holman said. Holman didn’t know what to expect from Painted Rose. He couldn’t find much video footage of previous rides on Painted Rose, so he called some friends that helped him out. “To be honest (that ride was) a lot of work,” he said. “That horse, the video didn’t do it justice. She went out there and did a big move to the left. I was just happy to stay in the middle of my saddle. It felt awesome to get my Fourth of July rolling on a bucker like that.” The 21-year-old is gunning for his first berth to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He entered the week inside the Top 15. In 2019, he was among the top 25 with about six weeks left in the regular season. But the knee injury derailed any chance he had to make the Finals. “The knee injury was pretty hard on me at first,” Holman said. “I had set myself up to make my first Finals, and obviously I didn’t accomplish that due to the knee injury. It’s been a hard year losing my grandma and with COVID. I’m just looking at the bigger picture, and it’s been awesome and been a blessing doing what we love.” Holman was glad to have multiple rodeos to compete at during Cowboy Christmas. “The first time you walk behind the chutes and see all your buddies – it’s more of a brotherhood than anything back there – it’s pretty dang special to get back there,” he said. “Everyone’s as excited to see you as you are to see them.”
