Ponoka win launches Guenthner into thick of title race

BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI O n the heels of his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth, Scott Guenthner has been gunning for a second. He was hanging around the Top 15 the first half of the 2018 season. Then came the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. Guenthner, who grew up in nearby Provost, Alberta, listed Ponoka as one of his favorite rodeos. On July 2, the 26-year-old Canadian could claim Ponoka as one of his favorite victories.

Guenthner posted a 5.4-second time in the showdown round to win the Ponoka Stampede and take home $8,250 for the round, $16,513 for the rodeo. “It was like a dream come true,” said Guenthner, whose wife, dad, sister and sister’s fiancé were in attendance. “Up here (in Canada), it’s always one you want to win. To have them there was pretty cool.” The huge chunk of change made a significant difference in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings for Guenthner. He vaulted from 14th to third with $57,243 as of July 11, about $4,000 behind leader Tyler Pearson. Boosted by Ponoka, Guenthner won $22,003 over Cowboy Christmas.
