Rise of DeRose Win at Cody is rider’s first

BY MATT NABER B areback rider Gavin DeRose hasn’t been in the PRCA long. But he already has his first PRCA rodeo victory, and it was a big one during a critical time of year. In his first season competing in the PRCA, DeRose won the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede on Independence Day, right in the heart of Cowboy Christmas. “It’s pretty mind-blowing and makes you feel like you got your name on the map,” DeRose said. “A big win like that can change your career and change your life, and I hope to keep rolling with it.” DeRose didn’t know much about Frontier Rodeo’s Tip Off before his ride. “I saw Tyler Nelson on him, and he got an 85, but I didn’t realize it was the same horse until the next day,” said DeRose, 27. “I said, ‘that’s a good-looking bucker,’ and knew it would be one to win it on.” DeRose didn’t realize he was competing in the final night of the Cody Stampede. “I just hoped nobody would bump me,” DeRose said. Tip Off didn’t cover a lot of ground for DeRose, but that didn’t impact the score, as DeRose surpassed Nelson and TimO’Connell by a full point with an 86. DeRose’s first win with the PRCA was worth $10,223. “There’s no words for it, it’s unbelievable the way the kid has progressed this year,” said DeRose’s travel partner Mike Solberg, 33. “That’s something
