So one of the purposes of the new podcast is to shed a spotlight on those quieter moments. For instance, during the June 26 NFR Extra episode, Brazile, a 24-time NFR gold buckle winner, shared an inside peek into how he and Tuf Cooper—his brother-in-law and fellow NFR cham- pion—stay sharp, explaining how every- day practice sessions at the family pen are so intense, it’s almost like a competi- tive professional rodeo. “That’s the coolest thing about our family dynamic is that we could have easily taken it for granted, but we didn’t,” Brazile said. “We were able to make sure we were practicing with each other—basically iron-sharpening all of us. It gives us a competitive edge even when we aren’t out competing in official events. There’s no substitute for competition, but we have created the same competitive environment without ever leaving home, because we work and practice together. We have made each other sharper and better, because there are no days off around here.” It’s that type of personal informa- tion that Gardner and Colwell hope longtime fans will find enlightening, while also generating interest in a new generation of casual rodeo fans. “Our goal with the podcast is to keep the NFR relevant all year long,” Gardner says. “Rodeo has many celebrities, but only a few are household names.
