Baldwin and Garza mark biggest win of careers Nano Second

BY MATT NABER S hortly after nearly losing his thumb, team roping head Tanner Baldwin and his partner Nano Garza scored the biggest win of their ProRodeo careers at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 13. “It was a huge deal, about two weeks ago in Greeley (Colo.) I almost cut my thumb off,” Baldwin said. “I had to stay out over the Fourth of July, but Nano stuck with me and that gave me a lot of confidence.” With the stitches out and tape around his thumb, Baldwin’s thumb wasn’t quite back to normal. “I got caught in the dally and it cut down to the bone all the way

around,” Baldwin said. “But it’s starting to feel better.” Spectators never suspected he’d recently visited the ER. “They pulled the stitches out Tuesday, and we were in Casper and Sheridan (Wyo.) onThursday (July 11),” Garza said. “It didn’t faze him there. He said he just started swinging it (his rope) and that numbed it – the adrenaline was pumping.” Baldwin, 24, had his best season since his rookie year (2014) when he finished the 2018 season with $30,499. Garza, 39, was No. 2 in the 2017 rookie race with $40,809 and ended the 2018 season with $33,617. Now that they’ve found their bearings, facing past world champions and frequent contenders for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo didn’t daunt the duo.
