CENTRAL WYOMING FAIR CASPER, WYO. Bull rider Riker Carter wins average in Casper Hanging Tough BY TRACY RENCK T his wasn’t the prettiest or biggest win of Riker Carter’s career. However, the Stone, Idaho, cowboy was still plenty happy to accept the victory. Carter, with his 86.5-point ride on Big Rafter Rodeo’s Economical Impact in the first round, wound up claiming the average victory at the Central Wyoming Fair & PRCA

Rodeo in Casper. “I believe I had seen that bull before, but I had never been on him,” said Carter, 27. “I did talk to a couple of guys and they said that bull was really good. He was good in the chute and that was my second bull back after I dislocated my (left) shoulder. I was nervous. That bull went out there 1-2 and came back around to the right. I ride right-handed so every time I threw my (free arm) up I didn’t know if my shoulder was coming out of place or not, but I just kept going and cutting loose and made the whistle.” Carter, who made his first-round ride July 9, was relieved to make it to eight seconds. “Right there at the whistle I came off and I got up and saw I made it and that was a pretty good feeling, it made me happy,” Carter said. Carter was bucked off his second bull, 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Dust Bowl, but no one else made two rides, so he won the average and departed town with $3,567. “The two guys ahead of me (in the first round) turned out and I ended up getting the title, so it worked out pretty good for me,” Carter said. “I never saw (Dust Bowl) before. He was good, and I definitely want to get a re-go on him.” Carter’s injury happened on July 5 following his rodeo-winning ride of 88 points on Hurst Pro Rodeo’s Mojo at the West Jordan (Utah) Western Stampede. “I jumped off and I was right by the fence and I reached out to grab it to try and catch myself and I dislocated my left shoulder,” he said. “I popped it back in and I’m wearing a shoulder brace and fighting through the pain and going to keep rodeoing.” With his Casper win, Carter was 38th in the July 30 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $27,084. The biggest win of Carter’s career came in June 2018 when he won the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls and earned $13,216. Carter, who joined the PRCA in 2010, is still chasing that coveted bid to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. In 2016, Carter placed a career-best 19th in the world standings. He was 21st in the world standings last year. “Moving forward this season I just need to stay positive,” Carter said. “My biggest problem the last few years is mind games. I have been a head case. I need to quit worrying about things and just go and have fun.”
