Big month of July has Wyatt in the Finals mix IN HIS WORDS NELSON WYATT

A fter February, I didn’t have a partner and he (Levi Lord) called. He asked who I was going to rope with, and I told him that we would rope this spring. It went well, so we stayed hooked. Levi is a couple years younger than me. He ropes really good. He’s a good guy to be around. The roping good together really helps it out. He throws fast, or if he just needs to catch, he catches. He hasn’t messed up very many for me. I’d seen him around before at some ropings. We knew each other a little but didn’t get to know each other until we roped together. You want it to be a friendship too because you’re around him all the time. I guess the only thing I can say is the winning really helps the friendship. To tell the truth, there was a time over the Fourth of July that I thought I’d go home before the Fourth run was over. I couldn’t seem to win when we left that first week. I didn’t seem to have all that much money, and it wasn’t going well. I got on another horse (T.B.) the night before Red Lodge (Mont.) trying to do something different. It worked. We won at Red Lodge (at the Home of Champions Rodeo). I’ve ridden that horse pretty much everywhere I’ve won anything. Man, it feels good (to be in the mix to qualify for the Wrangler NFR). Last year I started out good

in the winter but had a terrible summer. This year I had a not so good winter. I think when I left Reno (Nev.) I had about $14,000 won. I came out here to see it through, see what would happen. I didn’t have a whole lot of money when I left home. I think we went for about a week and didn’t win anything. Then we did well at Red Lodge, and it seems like since then

The month of July has been a good one for team roping header Nelson Wyatt. In addition to it being his birthday month (he turned 26 on July 6), the Alabama cowboy who now resides in Texas has won nearly $30,000 in July. Wyatt and his team roping heeler Levi Lord have gone from wondering if they would be able to finish out the rest of the season to trying to make the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Following wins at Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo and the Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho, Wyatt climbed to 17th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $44,226 as of July 30. Wyatt was 15th in the ProRodeo Tour standings with 2,472.31 points. Lord was up to 15th in the world standings and 10th in the Tour.

it’s been pretty fun.

We were in one of the last perfs at Red Lodge and went 4.2. We won first over there, and I guess it kind of started our fire. You’re not really thinking about it as much. Whereas, when you haven’t been doing good, it seems like you can’t get it turned around and do anything right. When you’re on a roll, your mind is not playing a factor. And we caught some good breaks too at a couple right times. After Spanish Fork we got to looking at the standings. I think we left for the road on June 25, and I had about $14,000. Then I happened to look at it July 25, and it was right at $30,000 that we had won. It’s unbelievable to me to come out here and win that much money and have such good luck. I’ve never really been on a heater like this before. I’ve done well, but I’ve never won at good rodeos like that back-to-back- to-back. It’s a blessing, to say the least. We both really needed it.
