Champion cowboys and cowgirl make stop at children’s hospital Visitors Special
BY BECKY HILLIER P More than 200 of the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country descended on Colorado Springs in mid-July for the Pikes Peak or Bust NFR Open powered by RAM. Though each competitor was prepared for fierce competition in the arena with the hopes of being crowned Circuit Champion, four PRCA athletes geared-up for an appearance of a different kind. Kaycee Feild, Jordon Briggs, Jacobs Crawley and Garrett Shadbolt, along with the Pikes Peak or Bust Girls of the West, spent part of their morning July 14, visiting children at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs. “It’s something that doesn’t require very much of us,” said Jacobs Crawley, 2015 PRCA Bareback Riding World Champion and PRCA Board President, “but just a little bit of time out of our morning could potentially make a big difference for a kid’s day.” Getting clearance for the athletes to visit was a team effort between the PRCA and the hospital staff. The athletes’ appearance was carefully coordinated with the health and safety of the children in the hospital in mind; children who are being treated for a host of serious conditions, some who were there for surgery, others who are battling cancer and have fragile immune systems. The visit was a nice departure from their normal routines and brought fresh perspective to our athletes. “It’s a blessing in my life to come here and see these young kids and families,” said Kaycee Feild, six-time and reigning PRCA Bareback Riding World Champion. “What they’re going through, it’s humbling for me and a reminder of how great I have it with my healthy kids and healthy family,” he said. The athletes did not arrive at the hospital empty-handed. They brought ice cream, stuffed animals and ProRodeo gear for the kids, many of whom were a little shy at first but soon warmed up to the larger-than-life
cowgirl and cowboys. Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier in bareback riding and father of two young children himself, Garret Shadbolt, along with Crawley sat on the floor and played with some of the kids and their new stuffed “It’s a blessing in my life to come here and see these young kids and families. What they’re going through, it’s humbling for me and a reminder of how great I have it with my healthy kids and healthy family.” – KAYCEE FEILD Reigning world champion bareback rider
