IN HIS WORDS RINGO ROBINSON

Fast horse and healthy year give Robinson leg up T hat win was pretty wild. We were able to run fresh cattle because Flying U Rodeo hadn’t had any ProRodeos this year. This was their first. You had to really score. I was able to stake that be at the top of my game with everybody else. I feel like the break made it to where I wanted to be – health-wise and strength-wise for sure. Bulldogging is a muscle sport; you’ve got to be strong enough to do what you want to with them. I was able to be in the gym and in the arena, and

Ringo Robinson had a promising ProRodeo career following his permit season in 2016. The 26-year-old, Idaho steer wrestler finished that permit season in second place in the PRCA | RAM Rodeo Permit Standings, but injuries limited his 2018 and 2019 seasons. And while 2020 has obviously had its own issues with a worldwide pandemic, Robinson is healthy. He proved that by winning the Ute Stampede in Nephi, Utah, July 16- 18, with a 4.0-second run to earn $2,551.

steer’s head, and he did a lot of it himself. It was pretty electric. We were down there (in the arena) a ways to be four-flat. I was riding my steer wrestling horse, Monroe. She’s 11. I’ve had a lot of time with her. I started her, trained her. We have a lot of trust, and she’s really fast. There are four of us riding her – Blake Knowles, Mike McGinn, Dalton Massey and I. We’ve all had pretty good luck. She’s been an awesome attribute to have in the rig all the time. This is one of the bigger wins for me, for sure. This is my best year on my card. But my permit year might have been my best season. The last two years haven’t been great. I tore my pec (pectoral) in 2018, and last year I rolled my bulldogging horse at a small, circuit rodeo and ended up with a blood infection in my knee. This is one of the first years I’ve been able to rodeo full time, and then we had that (COVID-19 pandemic). Everything feels great, I’m healthy. I was throwing down a lot of steers during the time off to correct some things, and it’s been really good. During the pandemic break I kept busy. I had 12 outside horses, I was riding colts and training rope horses. I spent time in the arena honing my craft so when rodeos did start back up, I’d

being able to throw a lot of steers was very helpful. This is the first time I’ve traveled with Blake. This winter I didn’t rodeo down south because I wasn’t qualified for any of the bigger rodeos. So, I leased my bulldogging horse to Mike McGinn, and he and Blake traveled together in the winter. They wanted to keep riding my horse all year. I said for sure. Then we got in the truck and started rodeoing. Truthfully, it’s a crazy feeling that they want to ride my horse. I’m very proud because it’s something I’ve owned and trained from day 1. Being able to own a nice horse is a pride thing for me. I also sell real estate. Both my parents are Realtors. It’s great. I get to make my own hours, which makes it easy to get out on the road. The goal is to rodeo full time and use real estate to supplement my earnings. It’s an easy job. If I can keep doing both it’d be ideal. Everything is looking up. Hopefully I’ll get qualified for next year’s big rodeos. That’s the goal for this year. I haven’t had enough rodeos and time to be in the Top 15 this year, but to get qualified for next year is a big thing.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

Did you compete in any events? George: When I got my PRCA card in 1971, I rode bulls, bareback horses and tie-down roped. I competed from 1971 to 1980. Did you grow up in a rodeo family? George: My dad team roped and went to amateur rodeos and jackpots. I learned how to rope from families in Pueblo (Colo.) and in Whitmore (Colo.). Every day I would ride my horse there to rope. I competed at Little Britches rodeos, amateur rodeos, high school rodeos and did pretty well. I received a college scholarship for rodeo and then got my PRCA card. How did you become a ProRodeo judge? George: In Belt, Mont., I walked up to secretary (Liz Kesler) and told her I had a doctor’s release after dislocating my shoulder. She said, “Perfect, we need a judge.” That was the first time I worked as a judge and didn’t do badly. In 1981, I got hired as one of eight judges to work for the PRCA as a Wrangler Pro Official. What’s the neatest aspect of the job? George: You’re outdoors and it’s not the same thing every day. You don’t know what is going to happen. I’ve seen a lot, and what amazes me is that I still see things happen at rodeos that I haven’t seen before. What’s the biggest challenge in the role? For 40 years, George Gibbs has worked as a ProRodeo judge, traveling to about 25 rodeos every year. He’s also served as a Pro Official at the National Finals Rodeo 38 times. Although Gibbs is away from his home in Maxwell, Iowa, for a significant amount of time each season, the 67-year-old said what makes his job fulfilling is the importance of the role and working in an unpredictable and fast-paced setting.

GEORGE GIBBS

George: Knowing the rules so you can implement them properly. You’re challenged every competition on them. I’ve been doing it for so long, I know them well. But it’s still important to double check in the rule book and make sure you understand them correctly. What do you enjoy about the ProRodeo lifestyle? George: You’re not tied down and get to go to a variety of places. What has been a big accomplishment in your career? George: Working 40 years in the same role and still having fun. That’s what keeps me doing it. There are days that aren’t very fun. But I don’t think a lot of people can say they’ve had a job for 40 years and can say it’s fun. What do you like to do when you’re not at a rodeo? George: My wife has barrel horses, I enjoy going with her. She rides daily, and I ride, too. It’s a nice break. Do you like any other sports besides professional rodeo? George: I’m a Denver Broncos fan. I used to live in (Pueblo) Colorado. Do you have a favorite restaurant? George: Either Texas Roadhouse or any good Mexican restaurant. If you could invite anyone for dinner, who would it be? George: Clint Eastwood. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received? George: You have to stay positive. Things sometimes don’t go very well, and you’ve got to hold your head up. You’re going to mess up in judging. And always tell the truth. What do you admire about contestants? George: It’s a tough lifestyle. They pay their entry fees and they’re not home. They’re here one day and then 500 miles away the next day. I can understand not being home because I’m not home very much with my job. What is the significance of a ProRodeo judge? George: We are held to a high standard, and you have to know the rules. You must have integrity, and integrity is built through years of experience. I get tired, but you’ve got to hustle all the time. As soon as you get complacent, things don’t go well. Every ride and every run are highly important to the contestant because that’s their time. What makes you passionate about the sport? George: It’s unique. Your competition is not a team. If you win it, it’s all up to that individual at that given moment. It’s just you against the animal and trying to do the best you can. Sometimes I see great rides and runs that didn’t really get any money, but the guys tried very hard. That’s what it’s all about. What is a goal before you retire? George: I hope to be able to officiate the NFR another time or so because I know I’m getting close to retirement.

TIME CAPSULE 1990 HOF INDUCTION

Sue Rosoff photo From left: sportscaster George Michael interviews Lane Frost as Tuf Hedeman looks on after a performance at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Rodeo Rewind

The 30th anniversary of 1990 Hall of Fame Induction remembered

BY MATT NABER E very inductee to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame has made a significant impact on the sport, so each class of inductees is equally special. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1990 class of inductees to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, and it was unlike any other. Among the 10 inductees that year, was 1987World Champion Bull Rider Lane Frost. Frost, who was born in Colorado but grew up in Oklahoma, was the first to conquer 1987 PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year Red Rock, who also went into the Hall in 1990. Red Rock was unridden on 309 attempts and retired from ProRodeo

Rodeo. That year, fellow 1990 HOF inductee ClemMcSpadden was named the 1986 PRCA Announcer of the Year and Cowboy Hall of Fame Rodeo Man of the Year. Now, like Frost’s name being synonymous with bull riding, McSpadden’s name is tied to steer roping, with his memory living on at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping.

1990 INDUCTEES • Lane Frost – Bull Riding • Red Rock – Livestock (bull) • Clem McSpadden – Rodeo Notable • Walt Alsbaugh – Stock Contractor • Bobby Berger – Saddle Bronc Riding • Crooked Nose – Livestock (bull) • Verne Elliott – Stock Contractor • Mel Lambert – Contract Personnel • Wilbur Plaugher – Contract Personnel • Gerald Roberts – All-Around

The Oklahoma cowboy announced the NFSR from 1963-2000, served as president and board member for the Rodeo Cowboys Association, and was general manager for the NFR for 18 years while it was in Oklahoma City. Among his accomplishments with the NFR, McSpadden is credited with hiring then-unknown singer Reba McEntire to perform the national anthem in 1974. Beyond rodeo, McSpadden was a politician. He was a Democratic member of the Oklahoma Senate from 1954-72 and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1973-75.

undefeated. But the bull’s retirement didn’t last long. In 1988, owner John Growney created the “Challenge of the Champions,” where Red Rock and Frost had a seven-ride match. Frost emerged the victor, 4-3. Among Frost’s many accomplishments before his tragic death in Cheyenne in 1989 was winning the aggregate at the 1986 National Finals
