“It has been a long time,” said Lewis, 37. “It was really cool to do that again. I’ve always liked that place.” Lewis was a measure of consistency, placing third in both the first round (11.4 seconds) and finals (12.7) and second in round two (11.0). “It takes a certain kind of horse for a set-up like that, and I just had not had the right horse until this year to go out there (to Salinas) and do good,” Lewis said. Lewis was riding 9-year-old Jag. “He’s a little horse I bought this winter,” Lewis said. “He’s a good horse, and he really fits those big setups like that (at Salinas). He can really run, and he can rate in the right place. I had been riding him around the house (in Texas) the first half of the year because he wasn’t quite ready to lay the hammer back and go out. I came out this month, and he’s really come around.”
