before winning in Casper had come from earning $5,914 at the California Circuit Finals in Lancaster in mid-October and $2,779 at the All American ProRodeo Finals inWaco, Texas, about that same time. With the success inWaco came injury. Denny “didn’t even know what happened” and tore the labrum in his riding shoulder at the All American Finals. He tried to battle through the winter before finally taking a month off in the spring. His doctor gave him a choice, surgery or physical therapy. Hearing that surgery would keep him out about six months, Denny opted for therapy. Before taking time off, he also switched his rigging. He could feel a difference, but with the shoulder injury it didn’t matter much. Meanwhile, he tended to his fencing company in Minden – Pinnacle Fencing – and that made himmiss being on the road more. “Working all day, I was really wanting to get on the road and get some money,” Denny laughed. Finally healed, Denny hit the road, and the difference was remarkable. “It’s been a big difference,” Haworth said. “In the spring, any time he had anything strong you could tell something would pull on him, and it hurt him. He didn’t have that aggressiveness he always rode with. Now that he’s back to feeling good, he’s a lot more excited, having fun and riding good.” Over June and through half of July, he earned checks in Sisters, Ore. ($3,373), North Platte, Neb. ($1,052), and Pecos, Texas ($1,061), to go with his winnings fromCasper. “The winter was really rough,” Denny said. “I tore my labrum in my riding shoulder. I finally got it figured out that I needed surgery or physical therapy. I worked out crazy hard for a month, didn’t ride anywhere. I built up the muscle around it and switched to a new rigging. I’ve been drawing good. I’ve been placing and riding good everywhere.” The health and the rigging have given him a different feel in 2018.

“This (season) has been 100 percent different,” he said. “I changed up everything with my riding, especially with this new rigging I’m using. It seems to be working out a lot better, and I’ve been drawing good and feeling good.” REGULATORS, MOUNT UP Denny and Haworth are part of a seven-cowboy group they’ve self-titled ‘The Regulators.’ With that many guys, traveling to different rodeos is easier. “We’ve been rodeoing together since we started,” Haworth said. “We’re a close-knit group. We enter pretty similarly, try to get up the same. We’ll switch back and forth hopping rides. It’s a pretty great team.” The group has a good time with their friendship. “There’s a big crew of us,” Denny said. “Every time we get a big win or cool ride, we put it on Instagram, saying, ‘Regulators at it again.’” In addition to the fencing company, Denny is a fishing guide in the Lake Tahoe region. (Minden is about a half hour’s drive from Tahoe.) But with rodeo in full swing, Denny hasn’t done much guiding this season. “It’s a lot easier when I’m home because I can schedule people for weekends,” he said, adding that his dad also is a guide. “He’s running the thing when I’m not around.” Among the fish in Tahoe are rainbow trout, mackinaw (also known as lake trout) and kokanee, he said. “You can do it year-round,” Denny said. “It gets cold up there, but the fishing is always good.” Denny also knew the spurs awarded to winners at Casper were good. He saw them up close the year prior when traveling partner David Peebles won. Now he has a set of his own. “They’re really cool spurs,” Denny said. “I’m going to hang them up.”
