Four days after winning the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo., Lummus won the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colo. “I am glad that (PRCA CEO) George Taylor stepped up to the plate and is working to make rodeo better,” Lummus said of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo returning to the PRCA. “I really think he is out for the cowboys. To make this count and win $17,000 is a huge change. It changes the course of the summer and the course of the rest of the year.” Lummus made his Pikes Peak debut by winning the first performance with the fastest run of the rodeo at 3.7 seconds. “I had asked people who ran (the steer) before I did onWednesday, but nobody had hung it on him,” Lummus said. In the final round, he made a 3.8-second run, worth $16,462 – bringing his Pikes Peak total to $17,585. “That is a year-changing amount. It’s just awesome to win that kind of

The 26-year-old cowboy competed on an American Quarter Horse named Grinder, owned by his friend and travel partner, K.C. Jones. “We (Lummus and Grinder) match up well and he can really run. He also scores outstanding,” Lummus said. “Multiple people have ridden him, and he just does it to make our job easier.” Lummus’ friend, Ross Mosher, attested to the chemistry between Lummus and Grinder. “When you’re hot, you’re hot,” Mosher said. “He loves that horse, and when you put him on that horse it’s hard to beat him.” Jones was Lummus’ hazer in the first performance, while Billy Bugenig hazed for the finals. “The bulldogging has the tightest-knit guys, and everyone knows it,” Lummus said. “We are all friends. Ty Erickson is one of my friends, and he came down and pushed my steer out.
