Garrett Jacobs snares tie-down title
Garrett Jacobs picked a good time to step into the spotlight. The New Mexico cowboy clocked an 8.6-second run in the four-man finals to claim the NFR Open crown. The run by Jacobs was quite impressive, since 2019 PRCA World Champion Tie-Down Roper Haven Meged clocked a 10.7-second run to lead the pack right before him. “It starts with a good calf for one,” said Jacobs about the key to his run. “I was actually thinking to myself I always seem to rope really good when I’m either right in front or right behind Haven. It worked out for me this time.” This was the biggest win of Jacobs’ career, as he earned $15,024 at the rodeo.
“I really needed this,” Jacobs said. “I have been struggling trying to get in the top 40, so coming to a rodeo like this and doing good really means a lot and helps me out for the rest of the year.” Jacobs acknowledged he liked the setup on the final night at the NFR Open, competing in an eight-man gold buckle round, which was then trimmed to four. “I like (roping twice in the same night) because even if you make a slight mistake on the first one, you’re ready to run the second one,” he said. “Especially when they have the better calves at the end, and you know you’re going to draw good, and you just have to go out there and do your job.”
