RENO RODEO RENO, NEV.

Mike McGinn captures Reno Rodeo’s Silver Spurs Career Day TOP SCORES

TOP MONEY WINNER Stetson Wright

BY TANNER BARTH M ike McGinn has been competing in the ProRodeo ranks since 2015 but has never finished higher than 33rd in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. That may change in 2022. McGinn picked up what he calls the biggest win of his eight-year PRCA career at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, June 25. The Haines, Ore., steer wrestler captured the average title with a 12.1-second time on three head. Headed into the final round, McGinn was nearly a second back of the average leader. So, he knew it would take one of his fastest runs of the season to pull off the win. He delivered that and then some, laying down a 3.5-second run to win not only the finals, but the average. “This is absolutely the biggest win of my career,” said McGinn, 28. “I actually missed the barrier on my first two steers, and I still came back to the finals in a great spot. “I wanted to blow the barrier out in that last run because I knew I had a really good opportunity to win the rodeo. I wanted to get a chunk of this Reno money and that’s what I was after.” In the short round, McGinn mounted fellow steer wrestler Bridger Chambers’ horse (Rooster) that he’d never been on before, but the trust was there the moment he backed into the box. “I’m grateful that I had the chance to ride Bridger Chambers’ horse Rooster in the short round,” he said. “I had never ridden him before, but he’s a great horse. So, I knew if I went fast, he’d go fast as well, and if I needed to score, he’d score for me. He did exactly what I asked of him here in Reno.” The win moved McGinn to 15th in the latest world Standings after he earned $16,952 in Reno, bringing his season total to $34,488. That surpasses the most money he’s ever won in a single season. “I’ve never been too close to the NFR. I’ve been top 30 and 40 a few times in my career,” he said. “This is dang sure a really good push to get you into that bubble for the Finals and keep the summer going.” He said this gets the ball rolling in the right direction and hopes it continues with his sights set on qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo this December. “This really gets the momentum rolling and gives a guy a ton of confidence to keep going into the Fourth of July and kickoff the summer the right way,” he said. “The goal this season is absolutely making the NFR, that’s what we are all after. I just have to keep running the steers and keep taking advantage of opportunities on the steers that I have.”
