DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI
Cash-flush Cowboy Christmas sign of things to come A s far as Cowboy Christmases go, 2021 ranks among the greats. Not because of how much money was paid out (it was $2.4 million) or how many rodeos were at it vying for the same cash. Tuf Cooper opted to compete at only six rodeos and earned a Cowboy Christmas best $31,255.
Marcos Costa, the 2017 PRCAWorld Champion Tie-down Roper, was a great example of how much money is out there right now. Costa didn’t even win a round at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, yet he rode away with more than $8,000. And that was before his Fourth of July run, where he earned another $5,380. Sage Kimzey is another example. The six-time PRCAWorld Champion Bull Rider already has earned more money with three months remaining in the regular season than he earned all of 2020 before the NFR. Kimzey went into the 2020 NFR in Arlington, Texas, with $92,334. As of July 6, he had $120,195. And it’s not just Kimzey. In the other six disciplines, six cowboys have already broken the $100,000 mark, with four others within $10,000. (StetsonWright is two of those four for his earnings in saddle bronc riding and bull riding, making a combined $191,068). The money is there to be had. With the Fourth of July run in the rear-view mirror, we’re less than three months away from finding out who’s going to the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas in December and who’s going home to chart their 2022 plans. There’s plenty of money still to be won. With the payouts that have happened and ones yet to come – think ProRodeo Tour stops at the Calgary Stampede, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendleton Round-Up and California Rodeo Salinas – we might see record earnings for a season before the Finals.
included (34, and you can read all about it starting on page 37). It ranks among the greats because it felt normal, real, like it made a difference. Last year’s made a difference too, at a time when we all needed it. But this was different because it was the way it’s supposed to be. In 2019, the last season the world can refer to as pre- pandemic, the top 10 ProRodeo athletes over Cowboy Christmas earned a combined $260,972. During the pandemic, the top 10 earned $147,985. This year, $232,364. Some cowboys hit double digits in rodeos over Cowboy Christmas this season, while others decided to pick and choose their way around the country because they had already earned enough money that they didn’t feel obligated to go. That’s the key factor this year: the money has been there throughout the season and the options continue to expand. The fact that guys had already won enough before the Fourth of July that they didn’t feel compelled to go hard over during Cowboy Christmas speaks volumes to the amount of money that has poured into rodeos and out to the cowboys’ pockets. Last year over the Fourth, there were few options for cowboys. Not this year. This season, there were so many Fourth of July rodeos that a guy couldn’t get to every one of them even if he wanted. And that’s a key point – options. Heading into the summer months, guys knew things would open up. They knew they would have choices. They knew that every rodeo wouldn’t have the same competitors

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Jacob: My entire family grew up ranching, so I was already into it a little bit growing up as a kid. Then we had this old ranch pickup that had a Chris LeDoux tape in it, and that made me want to ride horses and rodeo for the most part. All of that has led to where I’m at now in the PRCA. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Jacob: I’ve wanted to do it for a long time, but until recently I’ve always had a full-time job as well. It was difficult to get to all the rodeos I wanted to because I would have to take time off from work. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I decided I’m not going to try to keep a job and rodeo at the same time. I’m just going to go ahead and try to give rodeo a shot full time. Why did you decide bareback riding would be your event? Jacob: I fell in love with the fight that comes with bareback riding, even a good bareback ride is always tough on you. I think that’s what draws guys into the sport, it sure did with me. It’s a fist fight every time you step foot on that horse. Also, I think listening to that Chris LeDoux tape every day helped, you’d be hard pressed to find a bareback rider that’s not into his music, I can tell you that. What’s this season been like for you? Jacob: It’s been good for me, there’s been some setbacks Jacob Lees has been a PRCA member since 2019. Now in his third season of ProRodeo, he’s starting to find success in the world of bareback riding. Lees, 25, put together the best ride of his young career on June 25 in Reno, Nev. The Caldwell, Idaho native put together an 86-point ride to win the second round of the Reno Rodeo. The win moved Lees up to 29th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $15,238 as of July 6.
JACOB LEES
here and there. I got bucked off hard in Pecos (Texas), I thought that was going to set me back for a while. Then I went and did well in Reno, so you never really know what’s going to happen in this game. I just have to keep working and getting better.
Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Jacob: The only other event I did was ride bulls for a while, but bareback was always what I wanted to do. What’s your favorite restaurant? Jacob: It would probably have to be Jockos Steakhouse in Nipomo, Calif. I’ve had just about everything they serve on the menu, and it’s fantastic.
Do you have a favorite candy? Jacob: Caramello Bars there’s no doubt about that. What’s your go-to movie? Jacob: I’ve always been a huge fan of the movie “42.” It tells the story of Jackie Robinson’s life and baseball career. Do you have a favorite sports team? Jacob: No, I don’t really have a favorite sports team, but I’ve always liked baseball quite a bit. What was the make of your first truck? Jacob: I had a Ford F-150 that had a camper shell and shag carpet in the back of it. I would go to high school rodeos in that. I slept a lot of nights in that thing over the years. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing for fun? Jacob: I’m a huge fan of building up old Harleys. It all started when I picked up an old bike for a couple hundred bucks in college, it was basically in pieces when I got it. I put that one together and have been doing it ever since. I think I like working on them more than I even like riding them. What’s your favorite holiday? Jacob: I would have to say Easter. I always get to see all my family on Easter, so it’s definitely one of my favorite holidays. What type of music do you like listening to? Jacob: I bounce back and forth regularly between older country and classic rock.

SHORT ROUND World champ Costa aims to return to Wrangler NFR Battling Back
I n 2017, Marcos Costa was on top of the ProRodeo world. Since, the Brazilian tie-down roper has been battling injuries. Costa made history by becoming the first native Brazilian to win a tie- down roping world title. He also won the average at the 2017 National Finals Rodeo with an 81.3-second time on 10 head and the RAM Top Gun Award for most money won at that year’s NFR with $195,519. That season marked Costa’s third consecutive trip to the NFR. “After 2017, I had an accident on the ranch and broke my left knee,” said Costa, 30. “I had to go back and redo my knee.” Knee problems have been a way of life for Costa. In April 2018, Costa was sidelined following right knee surgery. It was the fifth time Costa had had right knee surgery since 2011, when he initially tore the ACL in his knee after slamming a calf on top of his leg while roping in Brazil. In 2019, Costa finished 19th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings,
Costa
and last year, in the COVID-19-marred season, he was 29th. Costa has continued to persevere. He’s 13th in the world standings with $42,136, earning $8,472 at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, which ended June 26. “The dream is to get back to the NFR. I want to be back up there. It is always in God’s hand. I’m going to try and do my best, and I hope God gives me a chance to be up there,” Costa said. Costa, who is from Iretama, a small ranching and farming community in the southern state of Parana, is riding Pouraguaja, a 13-year-old horse that was the reserve 2016 PRCA | AQHA Tie- down Roping Horse of the Year. Costa rode Pouraguaja to the world title. “She’s still good as ever,” Costa said. Costa travels the PRCA trail with his wife, Keyla, a barrel racer.

association will hold the 2022 rodeo and midway events April 1-17. The increased prize money
to the rodeo payout for 2021 will be a large incentive for contestants to continue to make their rounds to San Angelo. The April weather also looks to be more promising for families attending the midway functions. In consideration of the numerous factors facing both the livestock show and the rodeo, the association voted to move forward with the 2022 Livestock Show in February. Staff for the association is working on a detailed schedule for the event but are expecting the event to run Feb. 3-20.
ProRodeo Sports News 5/14/2021 In 2021, the Board of Directors for the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association opted to split the livestock show and rodeo/midway events due to the COVID-19 pandemic and regulations regarding capacities events were facing. Though the livestock show faced numerous challenges with Winter Storm Uri and a citywide water crisis, both events benefited from the change in scheduling.

Red Bluff Round-Up tabs McKenzie to board
The Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up recently announced the addition of long-time association volunteer Cody McKenzie to its board of directors. McKenzie’s proven experience, coupled with a rich family history that runs back to the early days of the event, made for an easy choice. McKenzie began his rodeo run helping with various jobs for anyone who asked. During his volunteer tenure, McKenzie had the opportunity to work with late director Harvey Camacho at the roping chutes before joining cousin and future race
track director Zane Glines.
McKenzie became an outrider on the track around 2001 and spent the better part of two decades supporting in this position. Upon Glines’ retirement announcement earlier this year, McKenzie was asked to take on the role of race track director. McKenzie will be following in the footsteps of his great uncle Earl McKenzie, grandfather Abner McKenzie and Glines, who all donned the title of Red Bluff Round-Up Director.
