CODY STAMPEDE CODY, WYO.

Jacob Talley wins Cody Stampede in 3.4 BY TANNER BARTH J acob Talley is no stranger to the spotlight. The Keatchie, La., steer wrestler finished seventh in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings last season. Less than a year later, he finds himself No. 1. Talley has been near the top of the standings since the season began, and with a little bit of luck his success continued through the Cowboy Christmas run. TOP SCORES

“I’ve been drawing some really good steers, that’s been a key factor in my run,” said Talley, 30. “The horses we are riding are hard to beat. I feel like we have the best bulldogging horses going down the road right now in rodeo. They’ll let you go as fast as you want to go or adjust when you need them to.” Those horses worked to perfection over the Cowboy Christmas run, earning Talley a $6,269 payday at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede. He put together a 3.4-second run to take first, just a tenth of a second off the rodeo record, which was set by Chad Hagan in 1997. Talley leads the world standings with $96,240. “For me, every time I nod my head I’m trying to win first, I always go at things aggressively,” Talley said. “I try to be as fast as I can and win first every time, if I come in second, third, fourth or even not end up placing we will just keep going and win first at the next one.” The three-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier (2016, 2018, 2020) also receives plenty of respect from the steer wrestlers he’s battling against. “We’re all close, to be honest with you, we see it as we’re competing against the animal – you want to see guys do their best as you do your best,” Talley said. “The outcome will be what it is at the end of the day. We all have the same goal in mind and that’s to do as well as you can do on what you have drawn.” With less than three months remaining in the regular season, Talley is in a prime position to head into the NFR as the top steer wrestler. All he needs is for the train to keep on rolling through December. “It will come down to consistency, that’s it,” Talley said. “I try not to look at the standings or how much money we’re winning. It’s all about momentum, when you can get on a roll and stay on a roll throughout the summer that just carries right into the fall and into the Finals. That’s my plan right now.”
