Jess Cardon, left, picks up dur- ing the Brawley (Calif.) Cattle Call Ro- deo last Novem- ber. That was her debut as a pickup man at a PRCA rodeo and she worked the event with Bronc Boehn- lein. Dan Lesovsky photo
Jess Cardon a trendsetter as woman pickup man
J ess Cardon doesn’t see herself as a pioneer. She’s an official PRCA card carrying pickup man. Talking to ProRodeo veterans Cardon isn’t believed to be the first woman pickup man in PRCA history – but she’s the only one going now. Cardon, 30, acknowledged being a PRCA pickup man was something she never envisioned. “It is kind of one of those things that eventually just showed itself,” Cardon said. “I always admired it and loved it, but it isn’t something I thought I would do. Most of it came about when Josh (Reed) and I got together.” Cardon has been a pickup man for different rodeo associations and events for around seven years, but she didn’t make her PRCA debut until 2021 at the Brawley (Calif.) Cattle Call Rodeo, Nov. 14-15. “Last year, Josh, my fiancé, who is a pickup man, got hurt in Bakersfield (Calif.), and they scrambled to get another person to go to Brawley and we had been kicking around the idea to go ahead and get my card and my first rodeo was Brawley,” Jess said. “That was a big one to crack out at. A lot of times Josh and I pick up together. I have gone to a couple of rodeos now by myself. We just make sure I’m with the right other person. I also pickup a lot with Bronc Boehnlein and Danny Leslie, guys we dang sure know.” Cardon and her fiancé live in Caliente, Calif. They have their own business running commercial-based beef cattle. “When Josh and I started dating, he was into being a
and I grew up on a cow-calf ranch in Caliente. I got into rodeo and team roped – just a little bit of everything.” Cardon acknowledged being a pickup woman in the PRCA was a bold move. “There absolutely was some fear there,” Cardon said. “I was so worried about the bareback riding because if somebody got hung up, I know I’m only so big and don’t have that brute strength. That’s why I go with guys who know me, and I know them. I’ve also figured out my spot when somebody gets hung up. My spot is to get a hold of the horse. My initial reaction is to get a hold of the horse and stop the action. I’d like to thank Jeff Shearer, who I pickup with, and with the help of Paul Applegarth at WildWest and Flying U Rodeo and the whole Rosser family who gave me this start.” Cardon primarily works rodeos in the California Circuit. She has already been a pickup man at California rodeos in Brawley, Woodlake, Auburn, and Santa Maria and Glennville this weekend will be five. “There was a lot of good reaction and some bad

reaction,” Cardon said after her first rodeo in Brawley. “I just make sure I do my job and I do everything I can do correctly. As long I read the situation and put myself where I should be everything should work out just fine. I have several other rodeos planned for this summer and fall. I see myself doing this for a long time. I just feel like I’m a person doing my job. For me, it is not about being a pioneer or breaking a glass ceiling. To me, if you do what you love, then you never work a day in your life.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
Kreece Thompson, 19, grew up around rodeo and the western way of life. Now, as a rookie team roping header, the Munday, Texas, cowboy is looking to make his name known. Thompson’s top finish this season came when he placed second at the Waller County Fair & Rodeo in Hempstead, Texas. He currently sits second in the running for the Resistol Rookie of the Year award with $8,329 earned in 2022.
How did you get your start in rodeo? Kreece: My grandad started roping later in his life and that’s kind of where my dad started. So, my older brothers and I have always been around it. I think I was roping as soon as I could ride a horse and swing a rope. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Kreece: After my eighth-grade year I started to become a little bit better of a roper. Then in my freshman year of high school it was clear to me if a guy can put in enough time and work at it hard enough, he can make a living doing it. So, it was probably around then when I decided to give it a go. What do you like the most about rodeo? Kreece: For a living we run cows here where we live in Texas. So, I’ve always loved being horseback and doing anything that involves a horse. On top of that, I love to rope really more than anything. Why did you decide team roping would be your event? Kreece: Team roping is really what I grew up doing. To this day my dad still goes to roping events and when I was younger my brothers were always roping. So, it was just something that was already happening in my family and so it was easy for me to get drawn to it. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this year? Kreece: I have two horses right now that I really like, and I’ve gotten to ride them for a long time. Last year we had a good year amateur rodeoing and I felt like I roped pretty good. Everything was setup for me, so I thought it was a good time to try it out and start right now. Who is someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now?
KREECE THOMPSON
Kreece: I’m a header, so I really enjoy watching the guys that have done it for a long time and are good at the sport. I’ve always looked up to Clay Tryan because he’s truly a winner and he’s done it at that level for so long. What’s this season been like for you so far? Kreece: It has been really exciting for me and of course there has been ups and down. It helps that I get to do this with my brothers as well. They rope together and so I get to go everywhere with them. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season brings. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Kreece: My partner Chad (Williams) and I have gotten to rope in Austin (Texas) and Fort Worth this year. After experiencing those rodeos, they would be really cool to win. I also think Cheyenne (Wyo.) would be pretty cool to win someday. I think everybody has that on their bucket list. What is your favorite movie? Kreece: I don’t think I have one favorite movie in particular. I’m a big fan of action and comedies that’s for sure. What’s your favorite candy? Kreece: I would say I probably eat Hershey candy bars more than anything. So, that’s probably my favorite if I had to pick one. What was the first vehicle you drove? Kreece: The first vehicle I drove was probably my middle brother’s 2008 Chevy pickup. It wasn’t mine, but that was the first thing I learned how to drive growing up. What’s your favorite holiday? Kreece: I really Christmas and that time of year because since I was younger my family tries to take a skiing trip to Colorado once a year. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
Kreece: My favorite cartoon was no doubt SpongeBob SquarePants . I watched that show about as much as I watched any TV growing up. If it’s on, I’ll still sit down and watch it to this day. What is your favorite sports team? Kreece: I really like the NFL and football in general. We live two hours from Dallas, but me and my brothers are actually Houston Texans fans.

T he Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nov. 29-30. The Top 15 breakaway ropers will compete for prize money of $250,000 during the two-day, 10-round performance. “I’m pleased to see the continued success and growth of breakaway roping since the inaugural National Finals Breakaway Roping in 2020,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. “Breakaway roping has experienced rapid growth and it is now featured at over 300 PRCA rodeos annually. This success has resulted in an increase of prize money at the NFBR to reach $250,000.” The 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is Dec. 1-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Jimmie Munroe, WPRA president, also is excited for the 2022 NFBR. “The WPRA is looking forward to the National Finals in the Women’s Breakaway Roping being held at the South Point Hotel and Casino during the the PRCA Convention,” Munroe said. “So many committees are having breakaway roping at their rodeos and now they along with fans will have the opportunity to see the best women breakaway ropers in the world compete at the South Point.” The South Point Hotel, which is a hotspot for contestants and visitors during the Wrangler NFR, is glad to be the event venue for the 2022 Wrangler NFBR. “We are thrilled to host the National Finals Breakaway Women’s Professional Rodeo Association announced in a press release that the Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping will take place at the South Point Arena &
Roping at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center,” said Ryan Growney, General Manager of the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa. “When Paula and Michael Gaughan built the South Point, they created a place that Cowboys and Cowgirls could call their home away from home – we call it Vegas Cowboy Central. With the addition of the Breakaway Finals, we’ll call it Vegas Cowgirl Central, and it will be an amazing addition to all of the other events and activities held at the South Point during those first two weeks in December.” The 2020 National Finals Breakaway Roping took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in conjunction with the NFR and Jackie Crawford captured the inaugural world championship. Last year the NFBR took place in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel and Casino and was won by Sawyer Gilbert.

PALMER, ALASKA
NORTHERN MOST XTREME BULLS
Bull rider Tyler Bingham wins $20,000 in gold Gold Rush
BY TRACY RENCK T he second annual Northern Most Xtreme Bull Riding in America in Palmer, Alaska, was a gold rush for Tyler Bingham. The Howell, Utah, cowboy won the two- head average with 170 points at the Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event and then moments later he had a 92.5-point ride on Outlawbuckers Crazy Eyes, the bounty bull, to win $20,000 of Bering Sea gold on May 28. “It feels pretty awesome to win the (Division 1 event) and I came up here to win the gold and that’s what I did,” said Bingham, 29. In the long round Friday, Bingham had an 87-point ride on Outlawbuckers Afraid to Nod. On Saturday, he had an 83-point ride onWayne Vold Rodeo’s ByThe Batch to win the average by one point over Josh Frost. With his adrenaline still flowing, Bingham conquered the bounty bull. “That bounty bull was awesome,” Bingham said. “That thing had a lot of rear and a lot of kick. They handed me that gold in a jar. I have never won gold at a bull riding before. I just went at it like any other ride like I was in the practice pen. I just had to stay on. It was a massive sense of joy when I made the whistle. I got up whooping and hollering with everybody. It had to be a sold-out crowd. There was a lot of screaming and whooping and hollering going on. It was like being at the NFR. “I was extremely relaxed when I got on that bounty bull. I didn’t feel any pressure whatsoever. I was looking at him since (Friday) and I just knew I was going to get on him for some odd reason. I never thought once in my head that he would throw me off. I sat on him in the chutes, and he just felt perfect.” A year ago, Roscoe Jarboe won the Palmer event, but he failed to ride the bounty bull. Bingham earned $5,715 at the event, which gave him a boost in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He was 35th in the latest world standings. “It was a long trip over here to Palmer, but it was all worthwhile,” Bingham said. Binghammade the Wrangler NFR three years in a row – 2018- 2020. However, since 2020, Bingham’s career has been sabotaged by injuries. “The goal is to get back to the NFR,” Bingham said. “I’m healthy and feeling good. I just want to stay healthy and be consistent and just keep going.” At the 2020 NFR, in Round 7, Bingham drew rank bull Big Stone Rodeo’s Spotted Demon, and unfortunately, not only did he not make to the whistle, the buck off resulted in a nasty wreck. Bingham was rushed to the hospital and suffered extensive injuries, including multiple broken ribs. Then on June 23 of last year, Bingham was injured again at the Crystal Springs Rodeo Xtreme Bulls in Clear Lake, S.D., when he was bucked off Dakota Rodeo’s Midnight Rain. “I got stepped on and it tore my abdomen, my groin and I had a hip flexor tear off my pelvis,” Bingham said. “It’s great to be healthy again and as long as I can make money at this I’m going to keep going.”

BAKER, MONT.
FALLON COUNTY XTREME BRONCS
Sage Newman takes home Fallon County Xtreme Broncs’ title BY TANNER BARTH S age Newman calls the state of Montana home and the home cooking paid off for the Melstone saddle bronc rider May 27. In the span of an hour Newman put together two impressive rides to claim the Fallon County Xtreme Broncs title. It is his second Xtreme Broncs win of the season, he split the title with Lefty Holman at the MSU-Northern PRCA Extreme Bares & Broncs Challenge in April. “It was awesome that’s for sure,” said Newman, 24. “To be riding in the Big Sky country in these rodeos and bronc matches has been fun. This win felt great.” Newman advanced to the finals with an 85.5-point ride in the long round. In the short go, he matched up against the 2018 PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding Horse of the Year in Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic FromHell. It was the third meeting between the two and he ended this one with a 91-point ride. “I’ve matched up with him a couple times and he’s kind of my ol’ buddy I guess you could say,” he said. “We get along pretty good. That was probably one of the best days I’ve ever had on him, so I was happy to have him.” The win continues an impressive season for Newman. He sits first in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with more than $129,000 won so far this season. He said a big reason for his turnaround this year can be credited to hard work and having the right people in his corner. “I think just putting in the work has been huge for me. I was kind of just an average bronc rider before, and I felt like I just put in the work riding the spur board every chance I got,” he said. “Then you know traveling partners are really everything in this sport. That’s what can really make it or break it for a guy. I have a great traveling group in Kolby Wanchuk, Chase Brooks, and Tanner Butner. They all ride really well and have great attitudes. That’s really what you want.” There are less than four months left to go in the regular season and Newman is inching closer to locking up back-to-back trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He said while that’s in the back of his mind he’s just focused on having fun and doing his job on a nightly basis. “I feel great and I’m as healthy as can be,” Newman said. “I’m just going to go out there and have fun, while doing my job and sticking to the basics. It’s not rocket science. You just have to set your feet, lift your rein, and like I’ve said just have fun out there.” Veteran saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell finished second with an 87.5-point ride, Brooks and Kade Bruno tied for third with 85-point trips.
