FALLON COUNTY XTREME BRONCS

Sage Newman takes home Fallon County Xtreme Broncs’ title BY TANNER BARTH S age Newman calls the state of Montana home and the home cooking paid off for the Melstone saddle bronc rider May 27. In the span of an hour Newman put together two impressive rides to claim the Fallon County Xtreme Broncs title. It is his second Xtreme Broncs win of the season, he split the title with Lefty Holman at the MSU-Northern PRCA Extreme Bares & Broncs Challenge in April. “It was awesome that’s for sure,” said Newman, 24. “To be riding in the Big Sky country in these rodeos and bronc matches has been fun. This win felt great.” Newman advanced to the finals with an 85.5-point ride in the long round. In the short go, he matched up against the 2018 PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding Horse of the Year in Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic FromHell. It was the third meeting between the two and he ended this one with a 91-point ride. “I’ve matched up with him a couple times and he’s kind of my ol’ buddy I guess you could say,” he said. “We get along pretty good. That was probably one of the best days I’ve ever had on him, so I was happy to have him.” The win continues an impressive season for Newman. He sits first in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with more than $129,000 won so far this season. He said a big reason for his turnaround this year can be credited to hard work and having the right people in his corner. “I think just putting in the work has been huge for me. I was kind of just an average bronc rider before, and I felt like I just put in the work riding the spur board every chance I got,” he said. “Then you know traveling partners are really everything in this sport. That’s what can really make it or break it for a guy. I have a great traveling group in Kolby Wanchuk, Chase Brooks, and Tanner Butner. They all ride really well and have great attitudes. That’s really what you want.” There are less than four months left to go in the regular season and Newman is inching closer to locking up back-to-back trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He said while that’s in the back of his mind he’s just focused on having fun and doing his job on a nightly basis. “I feel great and I’m as healthy as can be,” Newman said. “I’m just going to go out there and have fun, while doing my job and sticking to the basics. It’s not rocket science. You just have to set your feet, lift your rein, and like I’ve said just have fun out there.” Veteran saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell finished second with an 87.5-point ride, Brooks and Kade Bruno tied for third with 85-point trips.
