MANAGER’S MESSAGE TRACY RENCK
NFR Media Day leads to compelling interviews Tom Donoghue photo From left, The Chute Bosses hosts Tracy Renck and Tanner Barth interview 2023 PRCA Bull Riding World Champion Ky Hamilton at the NFR Media Day on June 4 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. T he 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge is quickly approaching. Seemingly in a blink of an eye, things will unfold Dec. 5-14 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Six months before the NFR action is set to begin, Las Vegas Events hosted an NFR Media Day for the 2023 PRCA World Champions. All the reigning champs were in attendance – bareback rider Keenan Hayes, steer wrestler Tyler Some snippets include: • Waguespack talking about being a small kid who
was getting smoked by his fellow contestants in middle school and high school to trusting the process and becoming one of the best steer wrestlers in the storied history of ProRodeo. • Bareback rider Keenan Hayes discussing his golf game and golf attire. • Riley Webb chatting about the pressure of a being a teenage roping phenom and living up to the hype and capturing a gold buckle at age 20. • Wade and Thorp talking about their literally spur of the moment partnership to compete in the PRCA together and walk away with gold buckles. • Thurston discussing the quality of Canadian bronc riders going down the road. • Hamilton hitting the rewind button and talking about his 2023 NFR for the ages. • Stetson Wright talking about the trust he has in his father, ProRodeo Hall of Fame saddle bronc rider Cody Wright, to keep him going down the path to more greatness. • Patterson discussing the influence of his father Rocky and the advice he gets from legendary steer roper Guy Allen. • Pozzi Tonozzi discussing her magical, record breaking 2023 season she didn’t see coming. • Cameron detailing her path to becoming Miss Rodeo America Make a point to watch the upcoming episodes of The Chute Bosses (@TheChuteBosses) on Instagram and YouTube.com/@PRCAProRodeo and all streaming platforms. Learn much, much more about these individuals who took time in this casual setting to talk about their lives inside and outside the arena.
Waguespack, team roping header Tyler Wade, his partner/ heeler Wesley Thorp, saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston, tie-down roper Riley Webb, barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi, bull rider Ky Hamilton and all-around champ Stetson Wright. Miss Rodeo America Emma Cameron joined the festivities as well. The day began at 5 p.m. (PT) June 3 until 10 p.m. and then lasted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 4. This content gathering event was amazing for media members like me and colleague Tanner Barth, the ProRodeo Sports News Editor & Digital Media Specialist, PRCA Social Media Manager Jessica Butterly and PRCA Videographer & Producer Chris Theulen, because all the reigning world champs were in one location and the access was great. During the two-day event, Barth and I recorded 10 world champion interviews for The Chute Bosses, the official podcast of the PRCA – including one with PRCA World Champion Steer Roper Cole Patterson, who was in town June 3 and one with Miss Rodeo America Cameron. The best part about these interviews – which will run in the coming weeks on The Chute Bosses is it allowed Barth and I to peel back the curtain and get to know the athletes better.

Having a Hay Day
“After I won Miles City in 2021 it kind of sling-shotted me. I think I ended up winning four or five rodeos within the next month after
Dawson Hay has his sights set on his fifth Wrangler NFR qualification. The Wildwood,
Alberta, native has himself right in the mix headed into the summer run. Hay ended May strong, grabbing the title at the Miles City (Mont.) Bucking Horse Sale Matched Xtreme Bronc Ride. The two rides in Montana vaulted him inside the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings.
winning it in 2021 for one of my better seasons that I’ve ever had. So, it’s all the confidence in the world (winning this event). I feel like I’m riding the way
I want to be heading into the busy season.”

HOT TAKES Ryan Jae photo Rusty Wright put his name in the win column at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo with an 87-point ride on Rosser Rodeo’s Yeti Rambler.
Heating Up Injuries in the sport of rodeo are inevitable, but for saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright they’ve been too much of a common occurrence over the last few seasons. He’s finally back healthy in 2024 and chasing his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo since 2020. He helped his cause at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo. Wright earned $2,572 and the rodeo win after his 87-point trip on Rosser Rodeo’s Yeti Rambler, May 31.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Bryce: I started rodeoing when I was probably eight or nine years old. For me it began with junior rodeos and progressed to junior high events, then to the high school rodeos and jackpots. It took off from there into the PRCA rodeos. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Bryce: There really wasn’t a moment it clicked. I just felt like this was something I should do for a long time and I kind of went with the flow. I started going to a few open ropings and was competing against some of the pros and not doing too bad. So, I decided I should probably do it. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Bryce: I team roped and calf roped through junior high and high school. As the years went on calf roping was kind of more my deal. I thought it was more fun to compete in. There’s nothing like getting off and tying one down fast. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Bryce: I have always team roped and calf roped as I said before. I also did a little bit of chute dogging when I was younger. One of these days I’d like to give steer wrestling a try but right now it’s not my top priority. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Bryce: I stayed on my Permit for two years and didn’t really feel like rushing into it. I was looking for more horsepower the last couple years and I feel like I finally got the set of horses I needed heading into this year. So, I thought why not now. What have you learned during your Resistol Rookie season? Bryce: I feel like I have learned a ton honestly. So far, I’ve learned that you really have to be on top of your entering as a pro and you always have to be as prepared as possible. You never know what’s going to happen when you’re out there rodeoing. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Bryce Derrer, 22, spent two seasons on his PRORODEO permit before hitting the road as a full-time professional in 2024. The wait has paid off for the Portales, N.M., tie-down roper during his Resistol Rookie campaign. Derrer’s biggest payday this season came at the San Angelo (Texas) Stock Show and Rodeo, where he pocketed $4,714 for the top-10 finish. He currently leads the Resistol Rookie of the Year race in tie-down roping with $33,650.
BRYCE DERRER
Bryce: I look up to Richard Newton quite a bit. He’s rodeoed for several years and has kind of taken me under his wing. He’s showed me the ropes in rodeo and helped me enter. I’m also hauling with Brushton Minton this year and he’s been a big help. There are countless others that have helped me along the way as well and I can’t thank them enough. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Bryce: I’m going to Calgary this year and it would be pretty cool to win that one. You could put Salinas (Calif.) and Cheyenne (Wyo.) on that list as well. There’s a bunch of them I’d love to win. What’s your favorite movie? Bryce: 8 Seconds is a great movie. I’ve watched it a lot and it never seems to get old. What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo?
Bryce: It really depends on what our time schedule is. If we are in a hurry, it’s probably going to be a fast-food restaurant but if we have time to sit down it’s usually a steakhouse. If I’m being honest though it usually ends up being a ham and cheese sandwich, so we can get on the road. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Bryce: It was a 1999 Ford 6-speed 3/4 ton. Do you have a favorite candy? Bryce: My go-to is the Reese’s Take 5 with the pretzels in it. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Bryce: If I’m not working shoeing horses, I’m probably golfing, or I just picked up fishing recently as well.
What’s your favorite holiday? Bryce: I’d have to go with both Christmas and Thanksgiving because of the food, family and fellowship you get to have. What type of music do you like listening to? Bryce: I like listening to old country, rock, rap, you name it. My playlist is really all over the place, it has a little bit of everything.

After driving 28 hours from Las Cruces, N.M., to compete in the Leduc Black Gold Pro Rodeo in Alberta, Dallas made the choice to pile in a vehicle, leave his teammates from New Mexico State University behind and ride at the Casey Tibbs Match of Champions Xtreme Broncs event on June 1. He liked his first-round matchup in the event and if he could do well enough to qualify for one of the spots in the final eight, he knew there was a chance he might get to face off with Korkow Rodeos’ Joker Poker. “There’s pretty much two horses that you (Unofficial as of June 6) 1. I made a really good ride. It was probably one of the best rides I’ve ever made.” Might. Chance. Possibility. None of it was guaranteed. Yet somehow, it all came together for a moment that could redefine the up-and-coming cowboy’s season. After winning the first-round with an 88-point ride on Harper & Morgan Rodeo’s Carolina Blue, Dallas managed to get the literal luck of the draw, matching up with Joker Poker in the finals. His road-weary commitment paid off, resulting Dallas’ pairing with Joker Poker ended up feeling like fate as the Tibbs Xtreme Broncs match uses chips, selected at random by the final eight competitors. Because of his first-round win, Dallas picked last in the random draw, leaving him to assume someone would pair with Joker Poker long before he got the chance to pull a chip. “They kept picking horses and it got to the last four and I was like, ‘Well, there’s a 25 percent chance Joker Poker will be there.’ And then it was a 50 percent chance,” Dallas said with a laugh. “And then I ended up being the last guy and I got it. I was a little nervous, but it ended up working out and got her rode.” The win puts Dallas in position to do something rare – qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the same season. A big reason for that is the show he put on for fans just three days later at the Outlaw Buckers & Oil Kings Bronc Match in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Dallas walked away with the title after his 88.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Flying Carma in the Finals. For the two performances he pocketed $20,215, giving him a major boost in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. “This is for sure a confidence booster for me,” Dallas said. “In my head, I want to win a world title, so this is a step toward doing that. Obviously, it’s nice to get some big wins and those kind of reaffirm that belief within yourself. But I have to find a way to keep the ball rolling and I’m not going to let this success get to my head. It’s a long season out here.” After winning the Grand Canyon Region saddle bronc title this year and helping New Mexico State to the overall region championship, Dallas and 15 of his teammates will be in Casper, Wyo., from June 9-15 to take part in the CNFR. Following that, it’ll be all PRCA events all summer as the Resistol Rookie of the Year candidate looks to climb into the Top 15 for a trip to NFR on his first try. To accomplish that, Dallas knows there’s going to be a lot more driving, with more nonsensical road trips from rodeo to rodeo, hoping for good matchups. If anything, he’s proven that sometimes a plan that doesn’t make sense to others can work out well. “It’s tough but it’s worth it,” Dallas said. in an 89-point ride to win the finals and, more importantly, securing his biggest payday yet. The two round wins at the event resulted in $10,642 towards Dallas’ ledger for the season. Doug Jorgensen photo Zachary Dallas had an 88-point ride on Harper & Morgan Rodeo’s Carolina Blue in the first round of the Casey Tibbs Match of Champions Xtreme Broncs event to set his victory in motion.
