EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK
Contestants gear up for lucrative summer run Phil Doyle photo Tie-down roper Riley Webb, above, kick-started his 2022 PRCA season by winning the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, which helped him make his Wran gler National Finals Rodeo debut last December in Las Vegas.
C owboys say it all the time – the PRCA season is not a sprint it is a marathon. With that context in mind, contestants need to pick things up to a brisk jog as the season heads into the middle of June. The big rodeo on the upcoming rodeo slate is Reno, Nev. The Reno Rodeo has long been called the start of the season – especially by veterans. The Reno Rodeo is slated for June 16-24 and last year the rodeo paid out $729,506 to contestants. If a cowboy has a stellar performance in Reno, he can earn around $15,000 to $20,000. Bull riders can cash in even more in the “The Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno’s nickname, since there is a Division 1 Reno Rodeo Xtreme Bulls on June 15. In 2022, four cowboys who won Reno qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. The list consists of bareback rider Leighton Berry; co champion saddle bronc rider Sage Newman; tie-down roper Riley Webb; and bull rider Creek Young. During Reno, contestants will also try to cram in appearances at Playoff Series rodeos in Pecos, Texas (June 21-24) and Prineville, Ore. (June 22-24). That will set the stage for the lucrative Cowboy Christmas run beginning the last week of June and through the first week of July. A year ago, reigning back-to-back PRCA World Champions – team roping header Kaleb Driggers and heeler
Then there’s the 2023 Calgary Stampede (July 7-16), which paid out $1.8 million last season to competitors. Reigning back-to-back PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Champion Caleb Smidt earned a rodeo-best $67,000 in Calgary last year. Sandwiched with Calgary is the 2023 NFR Open powered by RAM in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 11-15. The NFR Open will be one of the biggest rodeos of the 2023 ProRodeo season with $1 million in payouts to contestants, livestock and other PRCA members. Then, there’s the “Daddy of ‘em All” – Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, July 22-30. Last season, Cheyenne dished out $1.2 million plus to contestants. It doesn’t take a math wizard to realize from the middle of June until the end of July is a stretch where many contestants will punch their tickets to the coveted 2023 Wrangler NFR, Dec. 7-16 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. All the hard work, blood, sweat and tears can be rewarded in these six-plus weeks with a chance to win a gold buckle. Every contestant loves to rodeo, or they would not be competing in the PRCA.
Tracy Renck is the editor of the ProRodeo
Sports News . He previously served more than seven years as a media coordinator at the PRCA. He has three decades of experience in sports journalism with the last several consumed by ProRodeo.
However, winning the gold buckle is the ultimate prize. No matter what someone does the rest of their rodeo career or rest of their life for that matter, they will always be known as a PRCA World Champion gold buckle winner. Let the action begin and watch it unfold on prorodeo.com, our social channels and the pages of the ProRodeo Sports News .
Junior Nogueira set a Cowboy Christmas single-event timed-event earnings mark with each of them taking home $35,152 over the nine-day stretch.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
Kase Hitt, 18, has taken the ProRodeo world by storm during his rookie season. Hitt picked up the biggest pay- day of his young career back in February at the Brighton Field Days Festival Xtreme Bulls in Okeechobee, Fla., where he pocketed $11,210 for the win. The Ardmore, Okla., bull rider sits third in the running for the Resistol Rookie of the Year race and is 21st in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $38,904 earned in 2023.
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Kase: My uncles name is H.D. Page and they have raised bucking bulls for probably 35 years. So, I’ve been around them for so long and I love the sport so much. I started riding bulls when I was probably 14 and it just grew from there for me. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo?
KASE HITT
Kase: Everybody told me growing up if I tried hard and kept my hand shut, I could probably make something of it. When I was 17, I started going to a lot of bull riding events and it really started off there. I got the hang of it and started riding really good. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event? Kase: I grew up at my uncle’s place and was always around bulls since I can remember. He used to tell me a lot of his bull riding stories, and I really just wanted to be like him to be honest. It was a pretty easy choice for me when it was all said and done. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Kase: I roped a little bit here and there, but it has nothing on bull riding. It’s an adrenaline rush unlike any other when you’re on the back of a bull. What’s this season been like for you? Kase: The start of the year kind of started off slow, but once I knew that I was meant to be here I began believing that. It really kind of all came together after that. I started staying on more bulls and placing high. I’m just trying to keep it going and make the NFR this year. Why did you decide to buy your PRCA card this season? Kase: I thought that I was riding good enough at the time to buy it and make a run at Rookie of the Year. I made a business decision and ran with it. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Kase: I would definitely want to win Pendleton (Ore.) or Cheyenne (Wyo.) that’s for sure. I’ve always watched those rodeos growing up and who wouldn’t want a buckle from there. Who’s someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo?
Kase: I really look up to my uncle H.D. and my grandpa Dillon Page. They always handle themselves the right way and have that do or die mentality and put that into me at a young age. What’s your go to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Kase: I’m always looking for a good steakhouse to go to when I’m on the road. I love going to Texas Roadhouse when I can. What’s your go-to movie? Kase: I have a couple that I really like, but my favorite movie is probably Django . What was the make and model of the first vehicle you drove? Kase: It was a 2014 Chrysler 200. I put a lot of miles on that thing and just put it up for sale actually. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing for fun? Kase: I really enjoy helping out on the ranch and getting on practice bulls over there. I do a little bit of team roping in my downtime as well. What’s your favorite holiday?
Kase: I’m a big fan of Christmas. You get to see all of your family and open a lot of presents usually. What type of music do you like listening to? Kase: I mainly listen to country music. I like Tyler Childers and Colten Jesse quite a bit. I listen to a little bit of rock as well before my rides.

During the Dec. 8 and 9 performances, each of the rodeo champions will be honored on the hallowed dirt of the Thomas & Mack Center. The history and legacy of the Wrangler NFR is driven by its great champions, and we are honored to continue this tradition that was launched in 2022, when we honored Trevor
Brazile, Charmayne James and Ty Murray.” For each icon, LVE will develop a promotional campaign to promote the two legends and build a daily activation calendar to build anticipation for the ceremony inside the Thomas & Mack Center that evening. In addition to the banner ceremony during the second and third Wrangler NFR performances, several events are planned for the Icons. They will appear at The Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas on Wrangler NFR programming on The Cowboy Channel. The 2nd Annual Vegas NFR Icons Tribute Luncheon is set for Friday, Dec. 8 at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, where they will spend time with hosts Butch Knowles and Jeff Medders. The two announcers are icons themselves as they have been the broadcast team for the NFR for more than 30 years. Additional details about the 2nd Annual Vegas NFR Icons Tribute Luncheon will be announced at a later date on www. NFRexperience.com. One of the most popular cowboys of his generation, Etbauer won five saddle bronc world titles (1992, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2004) and garners respect for both his go-for-broke style and his humility during his career that covered parts of four decades.

PALMER, ALASKA
49TH STATE PRCA XTREME BRONCS
Northern Exposure
Sage Newman wins northernmost rodeo BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News T here is a beauty to Sage Newman as a cowboy. At one point last season, he wore a stashin’ and bashin’ mustache with his crew, making him look like he was straight out of central casting for a 1970s Western. And when it comes to his profession, he’s old school in his discipline and approach. “The mental game is a big part of bronc riding. You must have short-term memory and keep your confidence,” Newman said. “I really like to keep it simple. Go out and do my job. Fix the basics.” Following that blueprint, Newman produced a big win in a career spangled with them. The 25-year-old ranked fifth in the world last season after finishing 11th at the NFR, and showed why in a special event in Palmer, Alaska. Newman posted an 89-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Borderline Untimely at the 49th State PRCA Xtreme Broncs, securing the crown and the $6,289 top prize. The knowledge of the stock didn’t hurt. “I actually got on him last year and was like 84 points at Calgary Stampede. It was a good score here, but there were still about eight guys to go after me,” Newman said. “Borderline Untimely had a really good day. Everything bucked well up there. We just teamed up well together and it worked out like I felt it should. It was just a good bronc match with the way all the horses were bucking. It was anybody’s game. Everybody rode well. It was a fun bronc match for sure.” What made this win unique was everything around it. Newman arrived in Alaska a few days before the competition, and what happened next will stick with him as much as the victory. “We got to fly around in the bush plane and check out some glaciers, moose, and goats, just a lot of different stuff. Then the next day we went fishing on the ocean and caught some halibut. It was pretty wild out there on the ocean. It was kind of storming, kind of scary as heck out there,” said Newman, who had the fish packed and sent to his home base in Montana. “It was definitely worth it. I will remember that for a long time.” Newman is having the type of season that makes it hard not to peak toward the finish line. He won the lucrative RodeoHouston, New Year’s Eve Buck & Ball in Gillette, Wyo., and the 94th Annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship when he jumped a last-minute flight that he turned into profit. Last season, he banked $320,474 after reaching the NFR for the second straight year. “The end goal is to be in the gold bucking chute at the (NFR). I keep my goals high. I want to be in the top five when that rolls around,” Newman said. Newman acknowledges without hesitation that he “loves rodeo, the Western way of life and being a cowboy.” His desire to compete unfurled last week. He boarded a flight from Alaska to Denver, and along with 12 other competitors, hustled up to the Back When They Bucked event in Deadwood, S.D. He didn’t win, posting an 82. But the entire experience was worth it. “It’s been crazy few days for sure. I haven’t gotten much sleep,” Newman said. “I will get a few days off to get situated again and get back out there. It’s been hectic and fun. And winning in Alaska, that was the cherry on top. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

DARBY, MONT.
DARBY XTREME BRONCS Kaycee wins Darby for 2nd time in three years Feild’s Day
BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News T he day retreats into darkness. The body hurts. But the serenity following a victory remains hard to beat. Kaycee Feild began his professional career as a bareback rider in 2007, back when gas prices flickered at $2.28 and Big & Rich dominated the radio with “Lost in the Moment.” After dotting his resume with six world titles, Feild takes nothing for granted, but he also has learned to soak it all in when the opportunity presents itself. Recently, as he drove back to Genola, Utah, his smile could be felt over the phone. “I am with my wife and family, and the kids are sleeping,” Feild said. “Life is good.” The drive through long stretches of sketchy cell service allowed him to reflect on his latest victory. He caffeinated his push for the summer with a win at the Darby (Mont.) Extreme Barebacks, registering a 93.5-point ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo Company’s Night Crawler in the rowdy Richard Cromwell Arena. “Being on that horse and in that atmosphere, it was a really great event,” said Feild, netting $12,111 for his finals ride and a total of $13,361 for the event. Truthfully, Feild expected a special evening given his history with Night Crawler. To say this pair has worked remains an understatement. At the Wrangler NFR last December – Feild is a regular as a 13-time qualifier – the cowboy delivered a 92-point ride on the biggest stage, earning $28,914 for the Round 10 win. Roughly a month later, at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, he set the bar higher with a 93, good enough for a $3,255 prize. Then came Darby on June 4. “Oh man, when I got that horse, it was like, ‘Here we go again.’ She really tests my ability every time I get on her,” said Feild, 36. “She changes leads, makes you move in directions you really are not used to, and she can wiggle guys loose. And after five seconds, she gives you everything she has to get you off.” Showing poise and talent befitting his status, Feild produced the 93.5, edging out Cole Reiner (91), Rocker Steiner and Shane O’Connell (90.5). Feild won the Darby event in 2021 with a 92.5-point ride on J Bar J’s Straight Moonshine. “For sure I knew it was going to be a challenge. I wanted to stay in control in the short round. There are so many kids competing, and you want to put on a show. And she makes it hard to turn your toes out and make your body look as best as you can,” Feild said. “But it worked out.” Feild’s resume drops jaws. But he did not reach the pinnacle of his sport by looking in the rearview mirror. Even as he conducted the interview, he was eyeing the road out of Montana, his mind trying to relax as he considered what’s next. This has been a been a different season for Feild, not as successful early on as in the past. “You know what, I don’t know if this one rodeo gives enough of a boost necessarily for the season. For that money to count, I have to compete in more rodeos than I have in recent years,” said Feild, who had an 87.5-point trip on J Bar J’s Bunny Hugger in the first section of the Darby event. “I am going to have to push myself more. But I did feel a little extra boost tonight.”
