Derrick Begay/Colter Todd have won a lot of rodeos throughout their careers, but the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo had always evaded them, well that was the case until Feb. 24 at the Frost Bank Center. The team roping duo took one of the more difficult paths to reach that goal. They came up just short of reaching the finals at the conclusion of the semifinal round, which meant advancing through the Wildcard round was their only option. That didn’t seem to faze the veterans of the sport. They clocked a 4.3-second run to edge out Kellan and Carson Johnson’s time of 4.9 seconds to advance to the 11-team finals. The good fortune didn’t seem to stop there. As the last team out Begay/Todd stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds to tie Clint Summers/Jake Long for first. The $22,250 they each earned was enough to walk away with the title.

“Everyone wants to win San Antone, this is a rodeo that I’ve wanted to win ever since I can remember,” said Begay, 40. “So, to finally get it done and get it done with Colter it means a lot to both of us.” The long road to the rodeo win wasn’t just because of their roping in San Antonio. The duo had to make the 1,750-mile roundtrip to Tucson, Ariz., during the week as they were also competing in La Fieta de los Vaqueros. It made them question their sanity a bit, but in the long run it was all worth it to walk out of the Alamo City with a win. “We are old, so when we left Tucson to come back over here, we were thinking man what are we doing,” said Todd, a four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier. “But to come back and find a way to walk out with a buckle it feels good. My goal is to just come out here and not let Derrick down if he gets the steer turned for me. Luckily, I was able to get that done here tonight.”
