Jeff Askey works hard for victory Veteran bull rider Jeff Askey had to work overtime on Feb. 25 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and in the end, he was celebrating. Askey won the Wildcard round the morning of Feb. 25 with a 90-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Let’s Go Brandon. That ride advanced him to the finals that night and he responded with another 90-point trip this time on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Bayou Bengal to claim the coveted title. “The guy I’m traveling with ( Jacob O’Mara) he told me right before we went on stage to do the draft (for the bulls in the finals), he was like that’s the bull you need to pick, that’s going to fit you,” said Askey, who celebrated his 35th birthday the day before he won San Antonio. “I didn’t know very many of the bulls. He knew my riding style and he knew the bull and he said that would be the fit and I’m glad I took his advice.” Askey, a five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, 2016, 2018-2020, 2022, earned $26,833 for his performance in San Antonio. “I try to stay real level,” Askey said. “I don’t get really excited. I don’t get real down. I always try to be in that sweet spot emotionally and mentally. You can be 90 twice (on Feb. 25) and the next day they can slam you the first jump. Then if you get slammed the first jump today, you can be 90-points tomorrow. You just have to stay confident in your ability and just go out and try your best every time and see what happens.”
