DIXIE NATIONAL RODEO JACKSON, MISS. Steer wrestler Caden Camp puts on clinic Camp Caden

BY DAGIN RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News C aden Camp started his 2022 season earning all-around cowboy honors at the Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals after qualifying in each of the three timed events. Now, the Montana native has shifted his focus to one event: steer wrestling. The narrowed focus paid dividends. In his fourth stop of the year, Camp collected a victory in Jackson (Miss.) on Feb. 19, winning the average with 8.3 seconds on two head at the Dixie National Rodeo. Camp started fast, claiming the first round with a 3.6-second winning run. The steer wrestler spoke with fellow steer wrestler and eight-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Dakota Eldridge earlier in the day about his draw. “I asked him (Eldridge) about it, and he said, ‘Honestly, I think he has a really good chance. The steer was average to the pen, and I just missed him,’” Camp said. “I just knew I needed to get a really good start and hope for the best. So, I got a good start, a good head catch, and the rest took care of itself. The steer was really good. I was very fortunate to get that one.” After the victory, Camp looked to back it up in round two. Riding one of Eli Lord’s horses, Camp finished with a 4.7-second run, enough to capture the average title. “I was just hoping to draw something right in the middle of the pen so I could hopefully make an average run to get the average win and it worked out,” Camp said. “I wanted to make sure I got out of the barrier, and I did that. I threw him in 4.7 (seconds) and it worked out perfect.” Paired with the $2,162 first-round check, the steer wrestler earned a total of $5,405 at the rodeo. Camp expressed excitement about the jumpstart an early season victory can provide. “It’s awesome,” Camp said. “It puts money in your pocket and helps you get down the road a little bit further. Hopefully keep that rolling into the next few weeks and the rest of the year.” Camp enters his fifth season in ProRodeo. The previous four, however, he competed in all the timed events - steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and steer roping. Following the Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals in January, Camp decided to make a change, hoping to do steer wrestling full-time in 2022. “I decided I was going to take break from the other events for a while and focus on the steer wrestling,” Camp said. “I’m going to be traveling with Eli Lord and a couple other guys and hopefully make a run at the (NFR).” He continues to eye every cowboy’s dream, making a National Finals Rodeo appearance and reaching the pinnacle of the sport, earning a gold buckle. For now, Camp’s going to keep things simple. “Right now, I’m going to focus on one run at a time and hopefully get better every single time,” he said.
