BY NICK CICERE B areback rider Devan Reilly entered the final round of La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 25, with a one-head score of 78.5 points. A bevvy of cowboys sat ahead of Reilly, but no other bareback rider was afforded the advantageous draw that he was come championship Sunday. Standing between Reilly and the necessary eight seconds was none other than the queen herself, Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Killer Bee. Bareback rider Devan Reilly more than a rodeo cowboy

The Tucson rodeo has stood the test of time since 1925. After 93 years of competition, the rodeo has a new name to pen within its record books. Reilly did his part, and Killer Bee did hers, equating to a 93-point ride in the final go. Not only did the 25-year-old’s two-head score of 171.5 points net him a payday of $5,518 and the average win, but no other bareback rider in the history of La Fiesta had ever garnered a score worth 93 points. “There were a lot of things going through my head,” Reilly said. “That’s a bucking horse. That’s the reason why we go down the road. I knew it was going to be a mental and physical test. Getting her, I knew it was going to be a test, but I was excited because I like to push myself.” John Reilly, Devan’s father, tried to relay his own piece of parental wisdom the night before his son was set to square off with the feisty, sorrel mare. “He told me, ‘You know, Dad, I’m pretty nervous about this one,’” John
