Chisum’s Trail Colorado steer wrestler learns from ProRodeo’s best Steer wrestler Chisum Docheff took fourth at the Elizabeth (Colo.) Stampede Rodeo in 2019 during the best summer of his ProRodeo career.

Then came last June, when perennial Wrangler National Finals Rodeo steer wrestlers Kyle Irwin and Tyler Waguespack were in Colorado and looking for an arena to get in some practice. Between the two, Irwin andWaguespack have qualified for 10 NFRs. Waguespack also has two world titles. Docheff, who sticks to the Mountain States Circuit, lives and works on his family’s dairy farm in Mead, Colo. He told Irwin andWaguespack they could come over because he had a bunch of steers that needed to be run.

The next couple days taught Docheff some invaluable lessons. “Tyler and Kyle have won everything,” Docheff said, adding that he’s also learned fromNick Guy, Stan Branco and others. “Seeing the way they (Irwin andWaguespack) are and the way they are in the practice pen changed my mindset completely. Rodeo truly is a mental game. If you’re mentally tough, it’ll make everything better and you’ll win a lot more. Almost every weekend after that I was able to win something.” When the 2019 season ended, Docheff found himself atop the Mountain States Circuit standings for the first time after finishing second in the average at the RAMMountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo. He had nabbed his first spot to
