Is there one steer roper you have enjoyed competing against most? Scott : At first it was (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Guy Allen. In his era, he was the legend to beat, and if you were second to him it was just as good as winning the rodeo. Buster Record Jr. was one guy who I really enjoyed competing against and Trevor (Brazile). Trevor and I have been competing against one another since we were at junior rodeos, like 13 years old. I enjoy watching him, and I learn from everyone. Why did you get involved in steer roping? Scott : When I was at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, my coach was Roy Angermiller (a multi-time qualifier for the NFSR). He was still steer roping when I was down there in college and that was the first I had seen of it, and I enjoyed it. I took to it and liked it and kept working at it. Did you ever imagine you would win four world championships? Scott : I didn’t. As a kid when you’re watching the old NFR tapes, you want to make the NFR and be a world champion. This is all I have ever known, rodeoing. I sacrificed a lot to do what I’ve done in rodeo. What was it like when you won your first world championship by $1.67 over then 18-time world champion Guy Allen in the closest world title race in any single event in PRCA history? It was unbelievable. I tell my daughter or anybody who comes to clinics or schools to not give up on anything. Don’t quit a run. You never know when you’re going to need that sixth-place check or whatever. It doesn’t matter if it is $20 or $20,000. You have to give all you have every time and get all you can out of it. Who has been your favorite horse to ride? Scott: I’m going to say Big Time. I won the world on him in 2008. He was awesome. He could score. He could run and was really strong. He was just honest. Every set-up was different, but it was the same for him. He adapted to every one of them so easily. Who was the biggest influence on your career? Scott: Probably my family and my wife, Kelli, and Buster Record. The first year I traveled with Buster was the first year I made the NFSR in 2001. He was a big plus to me as far as learning how to win. My wife has always told me if I don’t enjoy it get out, but if you’re going to do it, you’re all in. Is there one thing in the PRCA you would like to change? Scott: I would like to have more steer ropings. It has gotten better, but I would like it to be just like the rest of it.

Do you have pets outside of horses at your place in Fredericksburg, Texas? Scott: I have 11 horses here right now and three dogs. I have two mini Australian Shepherds and a Schnoodle.

What’s the best thing your wife cooks? Scott : Cheese enchiladas. They are great.

Who is your favorite sports team? Scott: San Antonio Spurs. They have been my team for a long time. What rodeo have you won – besides the NFSR – that meant the most to you? Scott: I’m going to say the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up. I won it twice, in 2008 and 2013, and I won second two or three times. It has treated me pretty good through the years. It is just so different roping on a football field. You hate it, but you love it. Buster used to tell me treat it just like you’re on dirt, but heck there ain’t no way to do that. You can say that all you want, but in the back of your mind you’re on slick grass running down through there. Is there one restaurant you enjoy going to on the PRCA trail? Scott : One is Buddy’s (Drive In) in Andrews, Texas, for their steak fingers.
