CLOVIS RODEO
Hass sprints to steer wrestling title Perfect Timing
BY ALEX RILEY, Special to ProRodeo Sports News C layton Hass needed something good to happen. Back in mid-March, the Weatherford, Texas, steer wrestler picked up a victory back in his home state at the Rio Grand Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo. Since that moment, the results have slowed. Aside from a little more than $500 in earnings at the Oakdale (Calif.) Saddle Club Rodeo, Hass left every other stop since that win empty handed. The veteran ProRodeo cowboy was looking for a spark. He found it in Clovis, Calif. Hass earned money in all four rounds and won the average en route to an $11,464 payday and a much-needed outcome at the Clovis Rodeo in late April. “I just kind of stayed on the right end of them and did my job. It wasn’t easy down there,” Hass said. “I rode Walt Arnold’s horse and she’s awesome. She let me score, let me set my runs up and Caden Camp did a really good job hazing and the cards fell in my favor.” It was a tone-setting opening run for Hass as he easily won the first go by a full half second, finishing in 4.8. He stayed consistent over the next two rounds placing second (5.7) and third (6.2) in the second and third rounds, respectively. Going into the finals, Hass was in a good position to pick up the average title, but he opted to leave no doubt. His run of 5.9 seconds was almost three full seconds ahead of second-place finisher Cash Robb (8.3), resulting in an aggregate time of 23.1 seconds on four head for the rodeo. Dalton Massey was the next closest finisher with a total of 30.9 seconds. It’s the second time Hass has won Clovis, having previously finished atop the leaderboard in 2015. The result was a huge shot in the arm for Hass as it vaulted him into 15th place in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. The four-time qualifier to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo aspires of being back in Las Vegas for the first time since 2020. Since placing 11th in the world standings that year, Hass has finished outside the top 25 each of the last three seasons. While there’s still a long way to go between now and the end of the regular season, the Clovis result put him in position in the world standings to make the Finals. Now, the focus is on staying there. “It’s a good start. The Finals are made, to me, in the summer. But it’s a good start and I’ve had a decent spring and winter,” Hass said, noting he’ll take about a month off after his runs in Guymon, Okla., to rest and prepare for the summer. “I’m just going to do my best and see where it ends. That ultimate goal is to go out and give ourselves a chance to win a gold buckle. All we can do is run them one at a time and see how it unfolds there at the end of the year in September.”
