CLOVIS, CALIF.

CLOVIS RODEO

Big showing gives Anders new confidence Mindset

BY ALEX RILEY Special to ProRodeo Sports News K alane Anders needed a break. More importantly, he needed a little money. After a difficult 2022 season as a PRCA steer wrestler, the Bayard, Nebraska, cowboy decided to spend the winter working near the Canadian border painting houses. It improved his financial situation, plus it provided an opportunity to mentally reset. “Last year after rodeoing, I was kind of in the hole quite a bit and had to go working this winter and wasn’t able to get into any of the winter rodeos,” Anders said. “I was going to come back and kind of just do circuit rodeos, that was my thoughts. I was like, ‘Well, I really like California, I’ll just end up going out there and hit those and depending on how things go I’ll kind of figure out my year after that.’” That plan appeared to be the right one as the Golden State swing has left Anders California dreaming over the last few weeks. Following a second-round win at the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo back in early April, Anders picked up a check at the Red Bluff Round-up, followed by a championship at the Clovis Rodeo to close out the month. Anders placed in two of the three initial rounds at Clovis, won the finals in 5.1 seconds and secured the average title with a total of 22.2 seconds on four head. Clovis alone provided him with more than $9,000 in winnings, pushing him to 30th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with a little more than $17,000 won this year. “All of California I feel like was a really good month for me. I can’t complain at all. Clovis just kind of tied the bow on top of it and made it even better,” Anders said, noting he had never won any money at Clovis in two previous tries. “When I made it through the second round, I was like, ‘OK, it’s possible here. It does happen. They will pay you at this one.’” Anders attributes his success largely to his equine partner, Boss, a 10-year-old that belongs to Gary Gilbert. After his house painting job ended up north, Gilbert invited Anders to his ranch to train, specifically with Boss, who is competing consistently at the PRCA level for the first time. Through practice, the duo developed some solid chemistry, but needed a few rodeos to get in rhythm. Following a somewhat slow start, things are certainly looking up. “After my first big win, I was like, ‘Well, I think I’ll try him out a little bit longer,’” Anders said with a laugh.
