Tie-down roper Brayden Roe grabs win Front Roe BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News O ne year ago, the chase for the coveted Resistol Rookie of the Year title for tie-down ropers was pretty much a one-horse race with the dominant performance of eventual winner, and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, Riley Webb. Today, the chase for that same title is shaping up to be one heck of a race with the top five contenders only separated by about $10,000. made sure no one was leaving his name out of the conversation with a win at the second annual Resistol Rookie Roundup presented by the Cowboy Channel on April 29. Roe claimed the victory with a smooth run of 8.7 seconds in the round of four after advancing from the semifinals earlier that night with a round winning 9.0. His final run was the fastest run of the weekend and allowed him to leave town with $2,616 in earnings, money which counts towards the rookie race. “I’m headed back home to Idaho,” Roe, 22, said. Roe hails from Wendell and is majoring in Animal Science at Tarleton, while competing for the Texans in tie-down roping and team roping. “There’s lots of rodeos close to me at home over the summer and I’d like to start off and give it a go. “We’ll see how it goes but I’m hoping to at least get into the top 30, so I have a chance at all the building rodeos next winter.” Like many of his peers, Roe grew up around rodeo. His father, Skeeter, is a tie-down roper too and Roe took the usual route through junior and high school rodeo before going south for college. He competed at the College National Finals Rodeo in 2022. Roe’s father trains his horses for him and his current mount, Louie, is actually one that belonged to his younger sister, Alx. “I stole her from my sister,” Roe joked. “He was my practice horse for a couple of years and just worked his way up. He lets me do my deal.” The genesis of his rookie aspirations came after securing a qualification to the RAM Wilderness Circuit Finals Rodeo last season while rodeoing on his permit. But that qualification raised another issue amongst the family. “I was supposed to go to my cousin’s wedding that weekend. Actually, I was supposed to be in it,” Roe admitted. After some debate, he decided the opportunity to buy his card and compete at the circuit finals – potentially getting a great jump start on the Resistol Rookie Standings – was worth risking a little family angst. “In the end, I bought my card and skipped the wedding,” he said. “As it turned out, I had a pretty good weekend and won quite a bit.” In fact, Roe won a go round and placed in another to finish second in the average and win better than $5,000. While the circuit finals launched his season, it was the Resistol Rookie Roundup that re-started it after a slow winter. As with the inaugural event in 2022, this year’s event featured workshops and seminars for the rookies to help teach them the business side of rodeoing and Roe took part in those activities. “It was neat for sure,” he said, citing a workshop on interviewing and dealing with media. “It was interesting and cool to watch and learn.” The victory in Cowtown moved him to third in the Resistol Rookie Standings, trailing leaders Cash Enderli and Joel Harris. Enderli has won $26,078 while Roe stands at $17,128.
