MEAD’S SCENIC SPOT TO READ • Jeston Mead, ProRodeo bull rider from Holcomb, Kan., and his daughter Jeci Jaymes, 8 I have an RV I use to travel to rodeos, and we were out fishing so she could get out of the house for some different scenery. Not being on the road is a big change, so we’re getting to spend more time as a family and getting things done around the house, too. The hard part has been adjusting to all the different programs we have to go through, like figuring out all the logins and the apps we had to download for Jeci’s schoolwork. They have some video classrooms and do Zoom twice a week. They also use a math program and a reading one they log into, plus there’s a writing one, and they use YouTube videos. We’ve got it down to a routine for the most part now. I still go to work, but we get up and do breakfast and homework. My wife, Jhaymie, does most of it. They’re typically done by noon or 1 p.m., so then they just play and hang out. Jeci likes it, but she misses her friends and her second-grade teacher. We need to thank all the teachers. They’re working just as hard, if not harder now, getting the schoolwork out. They also have to deal with the students and the parents in understanding what they need to do with teaching the kids.

ASSISTANT TO THE SECRETARY • Amanda Sanders, ProRodeo secretary from Pagosa Springs, Colo., and her daughter, Riley, 7 Normally this is a busy rodeo time. I should’ve been gone for about five weeks already. Obviously, I’ve been home and that’s a plus. Riley misses going to work with me. We both love secretarying rodeos. She thinks I can’t secretary a rodeo without her. She really misses her friends and her teacher. She really struggled with it at first since she really likes school. First grade is easier than other grades, and I just have one child, so my hat’s off to moms with multiple, older kids. After breakfast we download whatever her teacher sends and then whip through it so we can be outside and do other things like biking, learning to cook eggs, learning to paint, riding, building and turkey hunting. She’s a smart kid, so we try to make it more adventuresome. Her teacher is amazing. They do a class-meet on Tuesdays andThursdays for more of a social gathering, and she calls every kid once a week for a 20-minute conversation about life. We are lucky to have such a great teacher. The best part about this is the family time, true family time. Even as a first-grader we were getting involved in a lot of things, which is good, but it’s also really good for family time. This brings everyone back to eating meals every night together instead of just grabbing a bite and running out the door to the next activity.
