SUMMER FUN

Family Time End of school year lets kids get out on rodeo trail with mom and dad BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI J ett Fisher is already looking forward to the middle of summer. And honestly, what 12-year-old isn’t? But Fisher has his eyes peering at the family’s annual rodeo trip that bases them in Sheridan, Wyo., for about a month while his dad, steer roper Vin Fisher Jr., hits several rodeos in the region. Like with many other rodeo families, once school lets out for the summer, the kids jump into the rig and hit the road with their parents rather than stay behind because of school and life. “I enjoy it a lot,” Jett Fisher said. “It’s probably my favorite thing to do, because I get to see a bunch of my friends and we get to go to fun places and ride our horses around and go fishing. It’s probably my favorite time of the year.” Vin Fisher Jr. and his wife, Candace, will take Jett, daughter, Danlee, 9, and son Mack, 6, to several rodeos during the summer, but it’s the one that’s centered around Sheridan that has the family in full vacation mode away from their home in Andrews, Texas. “I can’t wait to leave to go to Sheridan,” said Vin Fisher Jr., 14-time qualifier for the ClemMcSpadden National Finals Steer Roping. “Right now, with them in school eight hours a day and (me) working every day, there’s not a whole lot of time to get to be with your kids all day. So, when we take off for

“Home schooling for the first three years bought me some extra time rodeoing,” said Brazile, who is second in the 2018 RAMPRCA All-Around World Standings, 24th in the team roping header standings, 26th in tie-down roping and seventh in steer roping. “Now, it’s just a natural progression. I won’t be able to go as much now that they’re in school. I’m not going to miss out on what they’re doing.” That devotion to his family has led to a big change for Brazile, who has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and National Finals Steer Roping a combined 50 times in his various events. “When they were home schooled, they went with me pretty much year- round,” he said. “Now (in the summer), they are going to get to go a little more. But sports are keeping them a little closer to home, which has kept me a little closer to home. It (rodeoing less) has been great. The only thing is rodeoing without my family, after doing it for so long, that’s the only way I knew it. Rodeoing without them now it’s just not near as much fun for me. I find myself not entering as many rodeos because I don’t want to be gone.”

that trip we get to be together that whole time. We probably spend as much time (together) in that one month as we do in three or four months before that because everybody’s so busy.” NEWTWIST FOR LONGTIME CHAMP In Trevor Brazile’s highly decorated career, this summer will bring something new. The 23-time world champion will experience summer rodeoing with the family where the time constraints of the impending return to school will weigh on the Braziles. In the past, his son, Treston, 10, and his daughter Style, 8, have been home schooled. (Trevor and wife, Shada, also have 2-year-old daughter Swayzi.) But this school year Style attended traditional school, making this a traditional summer, which is untraditional for the Braziles. Throw in the multitude of sports Treston and Style play and Trevor isn’t sure exactly how this summer will go.
