PRORODEO HALL OF FAME

“Decisiveness is the thing that made my career and you’ve got to have that in rodeo. You have to anticipate what’s going to happen and go when you have to go. If you think about it for a second in the rodeo arena or on the football field, you’re going to get hit in the mouth. Success is overcoming obstacles, and these guys get thrown in the dirt, get back in the truck, drive hundreds of miles to the next (rodeo) and get thrown in the dirt again.” – KARL MECKLENBURG the franchise’s history. He played seven different defensive positions from 1983-94 and was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2001. “Decisiveness is the thing that made my career and you’ve got to have that in rodeo,” Mecklenburg said. “You have to anticipate what’s going to happen and go when you have to go. If you think about it for a second in the rodeo arena or on the football field, you’re going to get hit in the mouth.” Since his retirement, Mecklenburg has been a regular at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo and Cheyenne Frontier Days. The same qualities that allowed Mecklenburg to succeed on the football field attracted him to rodeo. “Success is overcoming obstacles, and these guys get thrown in the dirt, get back in the truck, drive hundreds of miles to the next (rodeo) and get thrown in the dirt again,” Mecklenburg said. “But being able to bounce back over and over and over from that is what is amazing about this sport to me.”

Mecklenburg, a former four-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler for the Denver Broncos, grew up around rodeo and relished the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the sport’s history. “It’s amazing. I grew up watching rodeos and have enjoyed it,” Mecklenburg told the ProRodeo Sports News . “I’ve never pretended to be a rodeo person, so this is as close as I’m going to get. But I love it. It has such a great history and (the Hall of Fame) is laid out in a way that’s really exciting to come and see.” Mecklenburg developed an appreciation for rodeo early in life by spending time with horses at his grandfather’s farm and watching the sport on TV on Saturday afternoons.
