IN THEIR WORDS JACOB EDLER Steer wrestling champ gets tuned in for this season W hen I was a kid, I would re- watch “8 Seconds” over and over and over. I guess that sparked some inspiration. But my family raised club lambs. Jacob Edler is enjoying his time as the defending steer wrestling world champ.
(S.D.). It felt pretty good to be announced as a world champion. Honestly, it kind of made me relax a little bit. It took a few rodeos to get my head on straight and realize that just because I was last year’s world champ, I still had to stay after it and keep working hard. Just because you’re a world champ, they’re not going to give you anything this year. I think I just let up. I wasn’t as aggressive as I was all last year all the way through the Finals. I accomplished a huge goal, and I wasn’t as determined and focused as I was back then. I was just a little more relaxed instead of being pumped up and ready to go back and do it all over again. But since I didn’t have luck at those first couple of rodeos, I got that hunger and desire back and put the hours and work back in and found that since then, I’ve been pretty consistent though the winter. Stockton Graves, my rodeo coach at Northwestern (Oklahoma State University), he’s the one in charge of our rig. It’s Stockton, Bridger and I. What’s been the most fun is all of us during the winter got on a big roll. We went to San Antonio and Jackson (Miss.), and that week, between all three of us, we had a $25,000 week. He (Graves) won at San Antonio and got some momentum rolling. Nothing is more fun than getting along with your traveling partners and everyone is winning. It’s like a train that won’t stop once you get everyone winning.
My dad built the program up and competitively showed lambs all over the country.
But it took him a few rodeos to remember what it took to earn that gold buckle. Edler has won $22,512 this season, good for eighth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of May 25. The 27-year- old, new daddy of a baby girl got a late start in the world of rodeo, but he’s come along quickly and isn’t planning on slowing down. Edler, who grew up in State Center, Iowa, lives in Alva, Okla., with his daughter, Taylee Mae, and fiancée, Moriah Glaus.
At places like the RAMGreat Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo in Louisville, Ky., or the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., or the River City Roundup in Omaha, Neb., when we got done showing lambs we’d always get tickets to the rodeo and I just really got interested. Being a rodeo fan and watching these big rodeos, I decided that’s what I wanted to do. I had to break poor Dad’s heart that I didn’t want to show lambs. But he was 100 percent supportive and got me into rodeo. I got a pretty late start in life as far as rodeo goes. I didn’t ride a horse until I was 13. I’m riding Bridger Anderson’s horse Whiskers. That horse is really consistent, really good in the box and easy to ride. He’s actually trained by one of my very good friends, Tyler Schau, who got me into rodeo and taught me how to steer wrestle and be a horseman. Not a whole lot has changed since I’ve been a world champ. Life goes on. A few more opportunities have come up. It’s been good. I just keep moving forward, just keep getting better. The first perf I came back to was in Rapid City

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
Why the late start to your PRCA career? Tuff: My wife and I started a family at an early age. I got them (the kids) where they are big enough to go (to rodeos) and that’s why I decided to do it. I wanted to make sure I was ready to go when I went out there. I rodeoed on my (PRCA) permit for a year and then I bought my PRCA card. What’s this season been like for you? Tuff: I’ve been chipping along here and there. I won money in Liberty Hill (Texas) and Andrews (Texas), and it’s been good. My goal is to win rookie of the year and to obviously make the (NFSR) if everything works out in my favor. That’s my goal every time I nod my head, win enough money to get to the Finals. That would be great. It would mean everything to me if I could win rookie of the year. That’s a lifelong goal I’ve had. I got a little later start, but I wasn’t going to let that slow me down. What horses are you using? Tuff: I’ve got two horses I’ve raised that I’m riding. One is Frank, 7, and my other horse is Tohbi, 6. I’ve been using both of them this year. Finding a horse good enough to win on is the hardest part, for sure. I’m proud of these two horses. When they were young, I knew they would make it. They have tried from Day 1 to do whatever I wanted them to do. I was a poor country kid who didn’t have any money, so I had to come make my own. I ranched on them and started tying steers on them, and they have become two pretty good horses that work for me. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Tuff: I did them all. I (tie-down) roped, team roped, bulldogged in college, rode roughstock, did a little bit of it all. What attracted you to steer roping? Steer roper Tuff Hardman, 29, got a late start in his rodeo career after he and his wife, Tori, started a family and had two daughters, Taylee, 7, and TyAnn, 3. The lifelong resident of Atoka, Okla., has raised two horses. Hardman, who bought his PRCA card in September, was leading the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings on May 25 with $7,485. His goal is to qualify for the National Finals Steer Roping.
TUFF HARDMAN
Tuff: I tell you what, I just thought it was more of a cowboy type of (event), and it’s hard to find people to team rope with. I like to rope calves and I like to rope horns, and I just put it all together and roped steers. It’s the most challenging event in rodeo I’ve ever done for sure. You have to put in more work than the next guy and you have to figure out how to keep your horses working when you’re on the road. What’s your home set up like? Tuff: I have a ranch in Atoka. We have a cow-calf (operation), and we also raise Charolais bulls. My daughters go with me every day on the ranch, and they go hunting with me. What’s your favorite restaurant? Tuff: Probably Texas Roadhouse. I get steak and sweet tea. Do you have a favorite candy? Tuff: I’m a Reese’s (Peanut Butter Cup) man. What’s your go-to movie? Tuff: “The Cowboys” with John Wayne. I’ve seen that movie a couple hundred times. What show have you watched way too much with your children? Tuff: I’ve watched “Mulan” with them several hundred times.
Do you have a favorite sports team? Tuff: Oklahoma State University Cowboys. What cowboy would you pay to watch? Tuff: There are so many of them. It’s hard to pick one. I have several I look up to, but I would say Trevor Brazile for sure. He would probably be my No. 1.
What was the make of your first car? Tuff: A 1991 First Gen Dodge. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing? Tuff: I hunt hogs. I hunt hogs with dogs quite a bit. I don’t really guide, I just hunt a lot on these ranches right here (in Atoka) for the farmers to keep the hogs out of their hayfields. I do a lot of hunting in the wintertime. We are overrun with hogs around here. They are Russian Wild Boar. What type of music do you like listening to? Tuff: Old country. My favorites are Merle Haggard and George Jones.

TIME CAPSULE MEMORIAL DAY
BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI S ome of ProRodeo’s best put it all on the line serving in the military. And some of those cowboys are enshrined in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo. Among them are Deb Copenhaver, Myron “Doc” Etienne, Freckles Brown, Dave Stout and Fritz Truan, who died at the Battle of Iwo Jima.

FRECKLES BROWN DAVE STOUT
One of the greatest saddle bronc riders to come out of the Pacific Northwest, Copenhaver won world championships in 1955-56. But before his rodeo career, he enlisted with the Navy Seabees at the early age of 17. He spent two years in North Africa during World War II.
Truan was a three-time world champion. He put his rodeo career on hold to join the Marines in 1942. The Army sergeant was killed at Iwo Jima while leading an uphill charge. His story inspired the 1949 film, “The Sands of Iwo Jima,” starring John Wayne.
After high school, Myron ‘Doc’ Etienne joined the Merchant Marines, serving at sea for five years. His rodeo volunteer work of more than 40 years landed him in the Hall as a Rodeo Notable in 2001.
Brown was a member of the OSS, a precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. He made four combat parachute jumps into China. He also won the 1962 bull riding world title, becoming the oldest ProRodeo champion in a roughstock event at 41.
Stout was the 38th member of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association and was the director of the Rodeo Cowboys Association Information Foundation and the editor of Rodeo Sports News from 1967-69. The HOF inductee as a Rodeo Notable also served in the Navy.

SHORT ROUND NFR average winner Pope returns from injury Set to Return
J ess Pope had a season to remember in 2020, winning the average at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finishing third in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $220,029. This season Pope has had success – he was 16th in the May 25 world standings with $16,337 – but has been sidelined with a lower back injury since April 3 at the Riggin Rally Xtreme Broncs in Weatherford, Texas. Pope was set to return May 29 at the MSU-Northern PRCA Extreme Bares & Broncs Challenge in Havre, Mont. “The injury had been ongoing for a while, it started hurting at the rodeo in Kissimmee (Fla.), in February, but at the (Riggin’ Rally) it started hurting really, really bad,” said Pope, 23. “I could hardly walk. It’s my lower back, and I haven’t been on anything since the Riggin Rally. I got on the bucking machine (May 26) for the first time, and it went really well. I felt a lot better. I’ve been doing a lot of therapy on my back. The MRIs on my back showed the L5 had been cracked or fractured for a couple of years and I had no idea.

“When I was riding, I really wasn’t focusing on riding my bucking horse. I was focusing on how bad my back hurt. I chose to do rehab and it has been about strengthening all the smaller muscles right around my spine. They (the doctors) said this isn’t a career- ending injury, but I have to take care of it and watch it.” While Pope has been sidelined with his injury, he
graduated from Missouri Valley College in Marshall May 1 with a degree in public relations with a minor in business. “It was great to graduate, and now I’m excited to get back out there on the rodeo trail and see how things go,” Pope said. “I’ve changed up my workouts and stuff and I feel 100 percent. There’s still a lot of money to be won, and I don’t see why there would be any reason why I can’t be in the mix and get back to the NFR.”
Sowing Good Deeds applications now open This season, one rodeo committee has a chance to win a Massey Ferguson® tractor for the charitable work that committee does. As a proud sponsor of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, AGCO® Corporation, through its brands Hesston® and Massey Ferguson, recognize that PRCA-sanctioned rodeos contribute significant support for local, regional, and national charities and organizations.
Deeds initiative, want to raise awareness of these many local efforts and reward one PRCA committee each year whose impact goes above and beyond. Agco will share the stories of rodeo teams across the country who are Sowing Good Deeds in their communities and will reward one of those committees with a new tractor. The deadline to apply for the Sowing Good Deeds initiative is Sept. 15. The five finalists will be announced by Oct. 31. The Sowing Good Deeds initiative is open to all PRCA- sanctioned rodeo committees, regardless of size. Rodeos can enter at http://bit.ly/SowingGoodDeeds
