Smith’s 2005 Dodge RAM 3500 truck was loaded with Casey Harp of Rafter G Rodeo and fellow bull riders Trevor Reiste (Smith’s traveling partner), Lane Selz and Tristan Mize for the 19-hour trip. Smith’s dog, Dory, a Kelpie, also was in the rig. “I went and picked up Tristan at the airport and I noticed my truck was starting to make a funny noise,” said Smith, 27. “I didn’t think much about it because it would come and go. We went back to the rodeo grounds in Salinas, and we piled into my truck because Casey, Trevor and I were heading to Cheyenne, and we were going to drop Lane and Tristan off in Spanish Fork, Utah.” Smith and Co. were more than seven hours into their trip and driving throughWinnemucca, Nev., when things fell apart – literally. “We decided to pull over and get some fuel and use
