Arizona team ropers snare title in ultra-talented field Turning Heads

BY TRACY RENCK T eam ropers Pedro Egurrola and Trevor Nowlin had never had any luck at Cave Creek (Ariz.) Rodeo Days. Those fortunes changed in 2020. The Arizona cowboys stopped the clock in 4.3 seconds to claim the victory over a talented field of competitors. Cave Creek Rodeo Days was the first PRCA- sanctioned rodeo since the COVID-19 pandemic halted rodeos in mid-March. “I think I have been (to Cave Creek) four times, and I had never even caught a steer there,” said Egurrola, 24. “I was telling my wife (Tatum) that I never had done well in Cave Creek, and she said it was the baby luck. We just had McCrady, a little girl, who is 3 months old. Anytime you win it is nice. This feels really nice because we had not been rodeoing and we were able to go there and make a good run.”

all of the time. It was a blast getting to rodeo again. “I had a little bit of nerves, but once you get in the box, you kind of don’t feel anything and just go about your business. This was the first time I ever got a check in Cave Creek, and it was great that we got the win.” Egurrola and Nowlin edged Chase Massengill and Nick Sarchett, who came in at 4.7 seconds. Egurrola was riding Copper T, 7. Egurrola has owned the horse since Copper T was 4 and trained him to be a team roping header horse. “When I got him, he was just a colt,” Egurrola said. “I’ve rodeoed on him for the last year, and he’s just dang easy and user-friendly.” Nowlin was aboard his primary horse, Fabio, 18, a horse he’s owned for one year. “Pedro and I don’t live very far from each other, and we get to practice together all of the time,” Nowlin said about the key to his team’s success in Cave Creek. “I think that helps out a lot. This is one of the bigger wins for me.” Egurrola and Nowlin have roped together on and off for four years, competing in the Turquoise Circuit.

“It was fun to be back. It sucks being at home, not having anywhere to go and just practicing. It was a blast getting to rodeo again. – TREVOR NOWLIN

Egurrola and Nowlin each earned $2,205 for the win. They made their run May 24, the final night of the rodeo. Egurrola is from Florence, and Nowlin lives in Casa Grande. “This was great to start back up,” said Nowlin, 21. “It was fun to be back. It sucks being at home, not having anywhere to go and just practicing

“We practice together a bunch,” Egurrola said. “We are going to go to the rest of the (Turquoise) circuit rodeos, whatever they do end up having. I know I would love for us to make the (RAM) National Circuit Finals Rodeo. That would be really nice for us.”
