Helping Out Multiple fundraisers generate $104,000 for JCCF

BY MATT NABER W hen a ProRodeo cowboy is injured, the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund helps lighten the financial burden until recovery is complete and the cowboy is back in competition. Keeping that fund rolling for the future requires multiple fundraisers with hundreds of donations and volunteers working to make it happen. In the last few months, a collective $104,000 was raised thanks to the Cowboy Downhill, Cowboy Golf Classic, the Mike Cervi Jr. Memorial Pro Classic Team Roping, and Cocktails for a Cause (previously known as the Skirts and Spurs Luncheon and Style Show).

“We look at them as athletes like NFL players, but they don’t get the same benefits those guys do – they don’t get paid if they’re injured,” saidWalter Felts, chairman of the Cowboy Golf Classic committee with the San Antonio Stock Show. “I believe in it so strongly because there’s a way of life these guys portray, the way of doing things. It seems we’re kind of straying away from that as a society, and it’s what I want my kids to be exposed to.” Steer wrestler JasonThomas is being helped by JCCF. Thomas made his Wrangler National Finals Rodeo debut in 2016. He broke his arm during a practice run Feb. 15 in Stephenville, Texas. It was estimated he’d be out of competition up to 12 weeks, meaning no income for the 27-year-old, Arkansas cowboy. “All I did was rodeo, it was my job, and they helped me ease the pain on
