LOVELAND, COLO.

Pratt wins steer wrestling title for second straight year Double Fun BY MATT NABER A double-double was on the menu for steer wrestler Cody Pratt, as he doubled his money from one season to the next by winning the RAMMountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo for the second time. The Pueblo, Colo., cowboy won $5,199 during the 2019 season and nearly matched it by winning the RAMMSCFR for $5,193. “The first time was my first time ever making the (Mountain States) Circuit Finals,” Pratt said, comparing his 2015 and 2019 wins. “I didn’t know what it all entailed, but knowing the money at Kissimmee and the opportunity is exciting.” His most-recent RAMMSCFR win came by placing third in the first round, second in the second round and winning the average by 1.5 seconds with a time of 17.1 seconds on three head. “Any money you make at the end of the (calendar) year is one you can put in your pocket,” Pratt said. “I didn’t go a lot this summer, and it was hit or miss when I went. But I was able to practice and have it come together, which has me excited for next year.” Pratt competed on Mamba, an American Quarter Horse mare that he’s had for a decade. “I’ve had her since she was 2 years old, and I’ve run so many on her that it works good for that kind of deal,” Pratt said. “I’d practiced on her quite a bit before (the rodeo), and she was dialed in and worked great all weekend.” Pratt, who began his ProRodeo career in 2011, had his best season in 2016 when he won his first RAMMSCFR in October 2015 and placed seventh in the average at the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo with $7,494 in the spring of 2016. He finished 43rd in the 2016 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $25,724. “I just got in the truck with some great guys and put everything into it,” Pratt said. “But since then I’ve been busy doing other things and haven’t put everything into it like I did that year. In the next couple years, I’d definitely like to go hard again.” Between obligations at home and running his business – Pratt Fencing – the Colorado bulldogger was strapped for time. “I just didn’t get to work at it as far as practicing and preparing as I should have been,” Pratt said. Pratt ended the 2019 season ranked 11th in the Mountain States Circuit, but he’s off to a running start in the 2020 season. Pratt and ChisumDocheff shared a mutually beneficial bulldogger/ hazer dynamic that ended in Pratt winning the rodeo and Docheff winning the circuit. Now, both bulldoggers are heading to the RAMNCFR in the spring. “He’s hazed for me all year and has a really nice hazing horse and gives me a consistent haze all weekend,” Pratt said. “It worked out great. I feel good confidence-wise, and it makes me want to work at it. I’m excited to keep working on my horses and myself and be more prepared for 2020 and put more focus on it.”
