Six Resistol Rookies eyeing history at NFR A s contestants prepare to compete at the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge there is plenty of excitement brewing. Obviously all 120 contestants have gold buckle dreams Rookies who are trying to etch their names into the PRORODEO history books. The names are bareback rider Weston Timberman; saddle bronc rider Zac Dallas; tie-down roper Cole Clemons; and bull riders Jeter Lawrence, Wacey Schalla and Cooper James.

they want to realize. One element about the NFR – which began in 1959 at the Dallas, Texas, Fairgrounds – is how few cowboys have won gold buckles in their Resistol Rookie seasons. The select list consists of Harry Charters, steer wrestling, 1959; Bill Kornell, bull riding, 1963; Roy Cooper, tie-down roping, 1976; Tee Woolman, team roping, 1980; Joe Beaver, tie-down roping, 1985; Sage Kimzey, bull riding, 2014; Haven Meged, tie-down roping, 2019; and Keenan Hayes, bareback riding, 2023. That list is in pretty rarified air since Charters, Cooper, Woolman and Beaver are in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo. And when Kimzey retires he is a lock to join the Hall with seven PRCA Bull Riding World Championships on his resume. Meged, 26, certainly is in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame conversation, as he has one world championship and two NFR average titles in 2019 and 2023, and he has qualified for the NFR six years in row – 2019-24. As for Hayes, the sky’s the limit for this Colorado cowboy who is just dripping with skills. Narrowing the list even more happens when you dive into which Resistol Rookie PRCA World Champions also won NFR average titles during their world champion seasons. That noteworthy accomplishment in PRORODEO history belongs to Super Looper Cooper; header Tee Woolman when he partnered with Leo Camarillo, and it is rounded out by Meged and Hayes. That brings us to the 2024 Wrangler NFR and the six Resistol

There’s no question all of these Resistol Rookies have an abundance of talent. They have proven that through the grind that was the 2024 PRORODEO regular season, which ended on Sept. 30. And honestly just qualifying for the NFR as a Resistol Rookie is worthy of high praise. The King of Cowboys Trevor Brazile, who won a record 26 PRCA World Championships, didn’t even qualify for the NFR in his Resistol Rookie season in 1996. He also finished second to Shane Slack in the Resistol Rookie Tie-Down Roping race. Now, is the one-time opportunity as Resistol Rookies – for Timberman, Dallas, Clemons, Lawrence, Schalla and James to shine in the bright lights of Vegas. Sometimes cowboys melt under the pressure at the Thomas & Mack Center. This is a grand opportunity for these six Resistol Rookies to prove their doubters wrong. Show the thousands of people in attendance and the thousands more watching live on The Cowboy Channel that age is just a number and the only number these rookies care about is being No. 1 on Dec. 14. The odds of being a Resistol Rookie and a PRCA World Champion in the same year are high – but not improbable. The world championship bar has been set by a handful of Resistol Rookies in the past. Now, it is up to latest crop of six rookies to see if they can join this elite fraternity.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

Caleb McCaslin, 25, wrapped his Resistol Rookie season in PRORODEO just outside the top 50 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings. The Jones, Okla., bull rider picked up his biggest payday of the 2024 season at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver, where he qualified for the finals and earned $9,312. McCaslin finished top 10 in the race for the Bull Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year award.

CALEB MCCASLIN

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Caleb: My dad rode bulls whenever I was younger. So, I’ve always kind of had an interest in rodeo. Then when I was about 12 or 13 my cousin took me and put me on a couple roping steers. After that I was hooked. I went home and told my dad I didn’t want to play baseball anymore. I told him wanted to ride bulls. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Caleb: Everybody around me was pushing me to be better and telling me how good they thought I was. That gave me the confidence to take this career on professionally. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event?

Caleb: My dad did it, so it was the one event I had the most interest in. I also just love it. It’s something that gives me that itch to keep doing it. I am addicted to riding bulls and think about it all the time. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Caleb: I team roped all the time growing up. I never went to rodeos, but we had an arena at the house and roped two or three times a week. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card last season? Caleb: I was one of the older rookies last year, I’m 25-years old now. So, I just decided it was time that I make something of it. I’ve been going to a bunch of bull teams events and making big bull rides, but they didn’t mean anything. So, I decided I wanted to go ride where it mattered and make a name for myself. What did you learn during your Resistol Rookie season?

Caleb: My year was extremely humbling. I started off the year really good and had really high hopes for the year. Then in the middle of the season I got banged up. I got to watching the standings too much and put a ton of pressure on myself, where I didn’t need to be. I had to figure that out in my own way. So, that was one of the biggest things I learned last year. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Caleb: He’s actually one of my good buddies, but I always like to have a conversation with Trey Holston every time I see him. He’s one of those bull riders where everything about him is professional. I just love the way he carries himself. I look up to him a lot in that aspect. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Caleb: I would love to win RodeoHouston, that’s one that I think about a lot. It would have to be either Houston or Pendleton, Ore., for me. What’s your favorite movie? Caleb: I would probably have to say Young Guns . What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Caleb: We like to eat Chick-fil-A a lot. We eat a lot of chicken that’s for sure. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Caleb: It was a 1997 Cadillac that had over 200,000 miles on it. Do you have a favorite candy? Caleb: I like the 100 Grand candy bars quite a bit. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Caleb: We either like to go golfing or we like to try to do some fishing when we get some downtime. What’s your favorite holiday? Caleb: I would probably have to say Thanksgiving because it brings everybody together. What type of music do you like listening to? Caleb: I listen to a little bit of everything really. I don’t have a favorite type of music. If somebody tells me it’s a good song, I’ll listen to it.

PRORODEO announces 2024 Polaris Remuda Awards

On Oct. 24, PRORODEO announced the recipients of the 2024 Polaris Remuda Awards. The stock contractor honored with the best pen of bucking horses brought to PRCA rodeos this year was Pickett Pro Rodeo, and the rodeo committee recognized for assembling the best pen of bucking horses was the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche, S.D. The annual Remuda Awards go to the stock contracting firm and rodeo committee that provide the best, most consistent pen of bucking horses, creating the best opportunities for contestants to score well. It marks the first time Pickett Pro Rodeo and the Black Hills Roundup received Remuda Awards. “A year ago, this was something that we as a committee set a goal for,” Black Hills Roundup executive committee chair Dallas Conner said. “And to receive this award is absolutely amazing.” The Black Hills Roundup held the 105th edition of the event in

the Rushmore State this past July. The rodeo, also up for Medium Outdoor Rodeo of the Year, assembled a pen from its primary stock contractor, Championship Pro Rodeo, with sub-contractors Fettig Pro Rodeo, Cowtown Rodeo, Harper & Morgan Rodeo Company and Burch Rodeo. “I’ve always said we have some of the best people and volunteers working with our rodeo,” Conner said. “We’re like family. We don’t always get along. But at the end of the day, we’re all doing it for the right reason. Hats off to our committee because they are a great group of people.” Pickett Pro Rodeo, based in Fairfield, Texas, added another honor to its long list of accomplishments with its first Remuda Award. “It’s very special,” owner Cullen Pickett said. “It’s one of the ultimate achievements to have your stuff recognized as some of the best.”

They put a lot of time and effort in our rodeo. So, I’m having a hard time accepting this on my own. It feels like it’s a group effort for sure.” Weishoff’s rodeo career has spanned nearly four decades. He started as a contest- ant, riding bareback horses in the PRCA for almost 20 years. DUNCAN, OKLA.

Jarrett makes late push at Prairie Finals Perfect Finish BY ALEX RILEY, Special to ProRodeo Sports News N ow or never. That’s what Ryan Jarrett faced going into the final round of the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Duncan, Okla. The veteran PRORODEO athlete got off to a bit of a RAM PRAIRIE CIRCUIT FINALS

slow start in tie-down roping. His opening run finished well outside of cashing a check at 11.3 seconds. His second go was decidedly better, a 9.5-second effort that placed him fourth in the round and earned a little bit of money. But if he was going to have a chance at another circuit championship, everything hinged on the final go. And the Comanche, Okla., native made it count. “I just drew a really good calf in the third round. I wanted to win the year-end deal and kind of knew I needed to turn it up a little bit if it was going to happen,” Jarrett said. “Everything went right, got a good start at the barrier and my little horse, just a young horse I’ve been piddling with and roping on, he was really good, and it couldn’t have worked out better.” Jarrett and his horse, Cracker Jack, posted a time of 7.4 seconds. The effort not only won the round but was also the single quickest tie-down time of the entire three-day event, allowing him to make up for that slow start and easily capture the title. The 15-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo finished with an aggregate time of 28.2 seconds on three runs, a full two seconds ahead of runner-up Austin Lawrence. In all, Jarrett secured $6,267 in earnings on his way to a third Prairie Circuit Title. He last won the tie-down roping in 2014 and took home an all-around honor in 2012. With circuit-leader Cash Fuesz not competing, Jarrett’s earnings during the season-culminating event pulled him ahead in the tie-down roping standings, giving him the overall season circuit championship by little more than $100. Along with a strong finish to the 2024 season, the win gives Jarrett something to look forward to in 2025. A circuit finals championship qualifies him for a spot at NFR Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., this July. The event brings together circuit champions for an exclusive rodeo during the heart of the summer run. For a cowboy who has been competing in the PRCA more than two decades and owns a 2005 PRCA All-Around World Title, the NFR Open is a new but welcome wrinkle in the sport. Jarrett remembers earning a place at previous National Circuit Finals Rodeos as being a bit of a chore. Previously, the event didn’t add anything to regular season earnings and generally took place in the spring. Thanks to restructuring in 2022, qualifying for the NFR Open has become a goal for every rodeo athlete. Jarrett is excited to be among them this summer. “The PRCA and rodeo itself has kind of, after COVID, sure turned it up a notch. It wasn’t that big a deal five or six years ago – I mean it was, but it didn’t count for the World Standings, and it just adds so much now,” Jarrett said. “PRCA puts quite a bit towards it and it’s dang sure worth getting a spot. Before, it would be like, ‘Aw, shoot,’ if you missed it. Now, it’s like, ‘I’m going to try and get there.’ In the middle of July in Colorado Springs, it’s the perfect time to be having it.”
