BY ALEX RILEY, Special to ProRodeo Sports News I ra Dickinson knew the battle to win the RAM Mountain States Circuit Finals was going to be difficult. The pen of saddle bronc horses featured some outstanding rides capable of producing big scores or big buck offs. He could navigate the horses. It was the field of competitors he knew would be the bigger challenge. “I was really blessed to draw the horses that we had and to have two of my traveling partners with me right there all the way through, Coleman Shallbetter and Bailey Small, my college teammates from Tarleton State. We push each other pretty hard,” Dickinson said. The Tarleton trio did just that, finishing among the top four riders in the average over the weekend, with Dickinson edging the field to take top honors. The Rock Springs, Wyo., product rode for 247 points on three head to slide past Shallbetter by a half-point and win the title. Small placed fourth with 238 points on three rides. Dickinson’s championship run got a boost through the first two rounds as he rode The Cervi Brothers’ Tank for 84 points to win the first go, followed by a 85-point ride on Kirsten Vold Rodeo Company’s Ima Be to claim Round 2. Both were the two highest scored rides of the entire weekend. Those results proved to be important as Dickinson’s final draw was Summit Pro Rodeo’s Devils Gate, an animal with a knack for sending seasoned riders to the arena floor. Throughout 2024, Devils Gate had only been ridden once in five tries. Dickinson’s final effort of 78 points left a lot to be desired, but it was enough to hold off a late charge from Shallbetter and claim the average title. Shallbetter won the third round with an 83.5-point effort. “We’re going to crawl back in the gym tonight, get some of that hate out of our heart and be thinking about that last ride and how it could have been better and just channel that energy on toward that 2025 season,” Dickinson said. While it might not be the perfect ending to the event, it was a solid place for Dickinson and his former Tarleton teammates to start the 2025 season. Along with bull rider and Mountain States Circuit year-end champion Mason Spain, they were able to help bring a College National Finals Rodeo team championship back to Stephenville in the spring. After remaining on their permits last year, the group is officially beginning their PRORODEO rookie seasons together. Thanks to the win, Dickinson has a slight opening advantage, leaving Loveland, Colo., with $7,855 in total earnings. But the competition is only beginning, and Dickinson knows his friends and traveling partners will be right there with him, both in the truck and in the standings. “The money is one thing, but it’s so early in this thing that I just try to count some blessings,” Dickinson said. “It is great to get a jump start, but all of us being right there together, we’re pretty highly motivated going into this next year.”
