PRORODEO ROPING

Good receives his winning belt buckle after taking home the average title at the Cinch Roping Fiesta, Oct. 27.

Indeed, the work has begun to pay dividends. Good was in a great place mentally when he arrived at San Angelo, competing at the Cinch Roping Fiesta. By weekend’s end, the steer roper topped the leaderboard with 46.1 seconds on three head and $4,237 in prize money. He gave credit to favorable steers. “I just drew really well. My first run I made a pretty good run on a fresh steer and followed up with a decent second run,” said the two-time NFSR qualifier. “Then in the short round, I drew another good steer and tied him down. Got lucky that a couple guys ahead of me drew some tough steers but I can’t complain.” Good switched back to riding an older horse of his, Archie, and plans on sticking with him for most of the 2025 season. The two have worked in tandem for the better part of seven years, including a pair of NFSR appearances in 2020 and 2023. “He’s a great horse,” he said. “Certain setups fit him better than others, but he’s been great the past few days.” San Angelo is a premier stop for ropers across the country. It features only two events, steer roping and tie-down roping, making it a special stop for the sport’s best. For Good, family ties and the win represent a dream come true. “Man, I’ve been going there since I was a little kid. I always dreamed of winning it. I’ve been down there probably six or seven years competing at the event and haven’t had much luck,” said Good. “I’ve had family members do well there. My father-in-law has won it twice, so I’ve been fortunate to see the saddles and buckles from it. It’s a prestigious deal to win and certainly a bucket list item for me.” The early prize money offers a head start before jumping into the winter rodeo season. Good plans on staying off the road the next couple weeks, spending time at home with his eight-month old son Sonny and wife Darcy. His horses and steers will keep him plenty busy, staying sharp before making another run at the NFSR. “Continue to stay focused with plenty of practice and be ready for them to kick off,” Good said.

shouldn’t have missed.” Good finished the year 16th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $46,769, missing the final qualifying spot for the NFSR by a mere $1,134. The Oklahoma native went back to the drawing board. “I’ve been at home working on it and changed our rhythm up a little bit. I have a really good set of steers at home, and we’ve been practicing to keep our mind right,” said Good, 33. “When you have things like this happen, it feels like a sign from God. It’s about keeping the right mindset.” Billy Good captures coveted Cinch Roping Fiesta victory
