Winning the Hard Way Brazile had to battle double roughstock rider for all-around

BY TRACY RENCK W hen it comes to capturing PRCA all-around world championships, Trevor Brazile has no equal. Brazile has won a PRCA-record 26 gold buckles, including a PRCA-record 14 in the all-around (2002-04, 2006-15 and 2018). The first two years Brazile captured all-around gold buckles – 2002 and 2003 – he had to stave off Jesse Bail, who competed in saddle bronc riding and bull riding at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas. “I don’t think it changes your approach (competing against someone who is in two roughstock events at the NFR), it just keeps you super aggressive because you know they’re running at double the money,” Brazile said. “They have earned that right, but it’s a double-edged sword because you do get two chances, but it is twice as hard on you, especially in the roughstock events.”

Brazile won the 2002 all-around world title with $273,998. Bail finished second with $259,946. That year, Brazile qualified in two events – finishing third in tie-down roping and second in steer roping. “I think it’s great for the sport when multiple people qualify for the NFR in two events,” Brazile said. “I love seeing it because in a world that gets so specialized it really says something about the competition to be able to pull a double shift all year and be able to be in the Top 15 in both.” Brazile followed up in 2003 with his second all-around crown while Bail was fourth in the standings. That year, Brazile finished ninth as a team roping header, fifth in tie-down roping and second in steer roping. Brazile and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Dale Smith are the only cowboys in PRCA history to qualify in four events for the NFR in their career. Smith and Brazile each qualified in tie-down roping, steer roping and team roping as a header and heeler.
