OTHER HIGHLIGHTS • Vin Fisher Jr. clocked the fastest time in NFSR history with an 8.2-second run to win Round 10. “I told myself I can go tie one down and cinch fourth in the average, but how many opportunities are you going to have in your life – I’m 39 years old and have been doing this my whole life – to run a steer like that in this type of environment to go for a record. There’s no doubt I backed in the box and I was going for it. I gave it all I had and that’s the fastest I can go. I was riding Gump, and I don’t know if a horse could do any better.” The previous fastest NFSR time was 8.3 seconds, shared by Cash Myers (2006), Jess Tierney (2015), Guy Allen (2016) and Tuf Cooper (2018). “I was out at my trailer after the run, and the legend Guy (Allen) came up to me and told me I made a great run and he congratulated me,” Fisher said. “That’s probably the only record of his that can ever be broken, so to break it is pretty cool, especially since he was one of my mentors who I grew up traveling with.” • Scott Snedecor set a Round 4 NFSR record with a 9.0-second time. The record was 9.2 seconds, shared by Trevor Brazile, Allen (each in 1999) and JoJo LeMond (2017). • Fisher and Rocky Patterson split the Round 2 win with 10.3-second runs to share the Colby Goodwin Award. The Second Go-Round Award is given in honor of the late Goodwin, who passed away after being injured during the ninth round of the 1999 NFSR. • Billy Good , who finished ninth in the world standings with $55,750, won the Dixon McGowan Award, given to the highest-ranked first-time qualifier to the NFSR. The award memorializes McGowan, who died at age 23 in an automobile accident May 10, 1997.
BY TRACY RENCK J ess Tierney had a memorable final day at the 2020 ClemMcSpadden National Finals Steer Roping, Nov. 7. The Hermosa, S.D., cowboy split the Round 6 win with Landon McClaugherty at 10.4 seconds and then claimed Rounds 7 (9.9 seconds), 8 (10.1 seconds) and 9 (9.8 seconds) outright a day after not earning any money in the first five rounds. “This felt outstanding,” Tierney said. “(Friday night) was a real humbling night. I drew some good cattle (Saturday night) and just focused on what I know how to do, and it felt really good to have that kind of success. Winning one round is an honor, winning four is something I never dreamed of.” ProRodeo Hall of Famer Arnold Felts set the record for most rounds won and consecutive rounds won at a National Finals at six during the 1993 NFSR in Guthrie, Okla. Tierney finished fifth in the world standings with $70,103. Tierney, who was fourth in Round 10 at 9.1 seconds, earned $40,251 the second night of the NFSR.
