BY TRACY RENCK T his wasn’t about making a statement with a flashy performance. Gary Gilbert took a business-like approach to competing at the RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo, Nov. 8-10. That mind-set paid dividends. Gilbert was consistent throughout the event, vaulting him to his inaugural average title at the RAM SCFR with a 13.3-second time on three head. “This feels great to get this win,” said Gilbert, 32. “My only option to qualify for the (RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo) was to win the average. That was my goal, and I achieved my goal. I took it one steer at a time, and it
worked in my favor.”

This is the second time Gilbert has qualified for the RAMNCFR. The first came in 2016 when Gilbert won the Southeastern Circuit year-end title. The 2018 RAMNCFR is March 21-24 in Kissimmee, Fla. “The last time I went to Kissimmee, I didn’t bulldog any good, and I’m going to chalk that up as experience, so I will be ready when I go back,” Gilbert said. Gilbert finished in 4.8-seconds in the first round – to place fourth – and he followed that with a 4.3-second effort to place second in round two. His 4.2-second run in the third round clinched the average.
