turtles and schools of fish. Since their grand opening in June 2000, the aquarium has welcomed in nearly a million visitors a year. By March 2003, Shark Reef Aquarium became the first animal care facility in Nevada to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “When Shark Reef originally opened in 2000, there were few inland aquariums,” said Adrienne Rowland, the Shark Reed AquariumDirector of Operations. “Mandalay Bay wanted to bring a unique experience to the tropical beach themed resort. Shark Reef evolved into a predator-based aquarium that educates visitors on the importance of sharks and our connection to the oceans, even in the desert.” The aquarium features 2,000 different aquatic animals, which includes multiple species such as Komodo dragons, piranhas, sea jellies, tropical fish and of course, sharks. The shipwreck exhibit surrounds guests with sharks, rays and green sea turtles. The Shark Reef Aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM The Discovery Children’s Museum is in its 31st year in Las Vegas, putting children’s needs for play, exploration, inspiration, belonging, and unique learning experiences above all else. The museum offers three floors of heart pumping, brain busting activities for children of all ages. This includes science, technology, art, and engineering exercises to keep kids engaged for hours. It provides a fun learning space for Las Vegas residents and tourists alike. “We see roughly 250,000 people a year at our museum, and it seems like that number is growing every single year,” said Jodi Gutstein, the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Discovery Children’s Museum. “Las Vegas is no longer only for adults, so we wanted to provide a space for children to come in and feel welcome.” The goal of the museum is to allow children to play while also learning and engaging in activities they wouldn’t normally experience. “The key factor within our museum is discovery,” Gutstein said. “We like to focus on inquiry-based learning where playing is happening all around the museum because we’ve found that kids learn best through playing.” The Discovery Children’s Museum is open to vistors Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. VEGAS INDOOR SKYDIVING If you’re seeking an exhilarating thrill while in Las Vegas look no further than Vegas Indoor Skydiving. At Las Vegas’ only skydiving venue you can experience the sensation of skydiving, without a parachute or airplane. A 1,000-horsepower motor keeps you soaring through the air in America’s original indoor skydiving facility. You will be floating, flying, and free-falling through the air with wind speeds up to 120 mph. All flyers are required attend a brief training class covering the basics of how to indoor skydive before taking flight. People of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come experience this once in a lifetime flight. The weight requirement for children is 40 pounds. A parent or legal guardian over the age of 21 must fill out a waiver at registration. Vegas Indoor Skydiving is open Monday throughThursday 11:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 10:45 a.m. to 7 p.m.
