into the third and final performance Hannum put together an 8.3-second run to take home the tie-down roping average title with 28.0 seconds on three head, a tenth of a second ahead of second place Trampus Quarnberg. “I came out and didn’t really make great runs the first two rounds, I made some mistakes,” said Hannum, a 2007Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “That calf I had tonight (Nov.6) was a slower one and they hadn’t placed on him the whole weekend. “I went out there trying to be the best I could in the go around but figured I didn’t really have a chance to win the average. I guess things worked out in my favor here in Heber City.” The win in Heber City clinched Hannum’s fourth trip to the National Circuit Finals rodeo, which will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2022. He says it’s a place he’s found success before and he’s thrilled to return to Colorado Springs, July 13-16 for the NFR Open powered by RAM. “I’m really excited to get there and try my hand,” said Hannum, 41. “I’ve had some success in Colorado Springs at the rodeo that they have every year. I sure like roping in that arena and you just have to take your opportunities and hopefully you can capitalize on them.” Over the last couple of years Hannum has switched the way he rodeos. Instead of chasing events all over the country he’s shrunk his traveling circle. Luckily for him there’s plenty of rodeos within driving distance of his home in Odgen, Utah. “I mainly go close to home nowadays, I went to probably 35 or 40 rodeos this past year,” Hannum said. “I live in Ogden, and it’s centrally located to where I can get to quite a few rodeos still. That’s probably the best thing for me though because all my boys are starting to do lots of sports, and I work full time.” But he’s not ready to hang up his rope anytime soon. It’s one of those deals that I want to keep doing it until I can’t feel competitive,” Hannum said. “As long as I can compete, I want to do it, but I’m not afraid to say the future is getting nearer than not of being done roping as well.”
