Those expectations were exceeded. Uptain earned $7,526 in bull riding and saddle bronc riding to capture the all-around cowboy honor when the MSCFR concluded Oct. 27 in Loveland, Colo. “I’m so beyond blessed to do that, especially only working the roughstock end of the arena,” said Uptain, 20. “There were a lot of tough guys in the timed events who work multiple events, and there are guys who like to steer wrestle and ride (saddle) broncs. To be able to do it just from the roughstock end is beyond anything I could have ever imagined.” If that wasn’t enough, Uptain, who bought his PRCA card in October 2017, won the bull riding average with 166 points on two head. That title qualified him to compete at the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., March 21-24. “Making it to Kissimmee is the biggest goal I have accomplished so far in my career, and it was amazing to do so,” said Uptain, who also had his career-best payday at the RAMMSCFR. “I’ve never even been to Florida. To get to go down there and compete with all these good guys and see where I end up is going to be exciting.” FIRST ROUND SETSTONE Uptain didn’t waste any time putting his talent on display in Loveland. The Craig, Colo., cowboy captured the first-round title in saddle bronc riding with an 81.5-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Hay Fever, earning him a $1,771 check. He doubled his pleasure by winning the first round in bull riding with an 82-point trip on Burch Rodeo’s Good Luck Chuck, earning him $2,435.

As Uptain prepared for his third-round ride on Burch Rodeo’s Zombie Too, the pressure was amped up even more when Cordell Curtis had an 86-point ride on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s American Blood to take the lead in the average. “I was the last guy out, and I had never seen that bull (Zombie Too) Saddle bronc rider Garrett Uptain had an 81.5-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Hay Fever to win the first round and earn a $1,771 check.
