MANAGER’S MESSAGE TRACY RENCK

PRCA ProRodeo file photo Vin Fisher Jr. is the active leader in National Finals Steer Roping round wins at 34, and he will try and add to that total when he competes at the 2024 NFSR in Mulvane, Kan., Nov. 1-2.

Action-packed NFSR set to unfold in Mulvane T he buzz in PRORODEO right now is about the qualifiers for the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. The 120 contestants will take aim at coveted gold buckles Dec. 5-14 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Before the Super Bowl of PRORODEO kicks off in Sin City – there is another big Finals event on tap first. wasn’t enough money to be won at the NFSR to catch the leader. That’s not the case anymore. Back in 2021 when Cole Patterson won his inaugural steer roping gold buckle, he earned an NFSR-record $85,761. Realistically, cowboys who have strong NFSRs should earn around $40,000 to $50,000. That’s not only a great payday, but also a check that could vault someone to a world championship. Like the Wrangler NFR, whoever performs best at the NFSR will

The National Finals Steer Roping takes place Nov. 1-2 at the Kansas Star in Mulvane just outside of Wichita. The action gets underway at 7 p.m. (CT) each night. Unlike the NFR, which has one round a night for 10 nights, things are much more compact at the NFSR, which makes it unique. The Top 15 steer ropers in the world compete in Rounds 1 through 5 on Friday and 6 through 10 on Saturday. So, if you get on a heater – the timing could not be better. Rounds keep clicking off and checks are to be had. Conversely, if things start going bad a cowboy has to fight the fight before all is lost on Day 1. Especially since the round money and average money is better than ever. Round winners will take home $10,718 and the second ($8,870); third ($7,022); fourth ($5,174); fifth ($3,326) and sixth ($1,848) place finishers also get checks. Staying in the average also is crucial simply because of the payout. The average champ collects a $32,016 check; second ($26,496); third ($20,976); fourth ($15,456); fifth ($9,936) and sixth ($5,520) all will get to visit the pay window. Back in the no-so-distant past seemingly whoever arrived at the NFSR as the season leader usually walked away the world champ because there

likely be the 2024 PRCA Steer Roping World Champion, and that’s how it should be. It’d be no fun if steer ropers arrived in Mulvane and were just competing for second place. Here are some more storylines to digest as cowboys prepare to compete at the Kansas Star this year. • Scott Snedecor comes in as the winningest active roper at the NFSR, thanks to collecting $606,507 in his decorated career, which includes four world championships. • Trevor Brazile, who won eight steer roping world titles, is the top career earner at the NFSR with $697,280. • Vin Fisher Jr. is the active leader in NFSR round wins at 34, followed by Snedecor at 31. The top two round winners in NFSR history are legends Guy Allen (48) and Trevor Brazile (36). • Fisher Jr. is returning to Mulvane in 2024 looking to add to that round win total and possibly claim his first career gold buckle. There should be no shortage of excitement and drama in Mulvane and on Nov. 2 the new star at the Kansas Star will step into the spotlight. Let the Countdown begin.

Jax Mills, 20, had a Resistol Rookie season to remember. The Montgomery, Texas, bull rider just wrapped up his first season of PRORODEO sitting top 50 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $52,846. His biggest payday during the 2024 season came by finishing second at the Bulls in the Ballpark event in Round Rock, Texas. Mills pocketed $8,270 for his 86-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Six Shooter. He finished sixth in the race for the Bull Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year title.

JAX MILLS

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Jax: When I was growing up my dad was riding bareback horses. So, I always saw him doing it and I grew up around rodeo. Rodeo was something I always wanted to do, and I just started riding bulls. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Jax: I won my (Texas) State Finals in high school rodeo and did pretty good at Nationals. After that I told myself there was no looking back. I told myself you got this, and you can make it as a pro. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event?

Jax: With my dad being on the roughstock end of the arena that’s what I grew up trying. I didn’t like bareback horses at all. I liked bull riding. I liked the adrenaline rush it gave me and just stuck to bull riding from that point. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Jax: I did some bareback riding in practice pens, and I didn’t like it very much. I didn’t like getting jerked down and popping out. I just stuck to the bull riding. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card last season? Jax: I was always told that there’s no sense in putting stuff off, so that’s one of the reasons I got my card. If you’re putting stuff off that just means you don’t believe in yourself. So, I just bought my card when I could because I believed I had it in me to win. What did you learn during your Resistol Rookie season? Jax: I definitely learned that you are going to put a lot of stress on your body between the driving and the rodeos every day during the summer. It’s going to be difficult on you, you just have to keep your head up and keep going at every bull. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Jax: A few guys that I’ve always looked up to are Parker McCown and Boudreaux Campbell. I grew up right around them and always going to their houses to get on practice bulls. They have always just helped me with my career. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Jax: Houston is the one rodeo I really want to win. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to quit until I win it. I grew up 45 minutes from Houston and that’s what I consider my hometown rodeo. What’s your favorite movie? Jax: I think I’d have to go with Gladiator . What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Jax: When I’m back home it’s probably McDonalds or something like that. But if I’m up north we are probably stopping at In-N-Out Burger. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Jax: It was a 2013 Chevy Silverado. I put a lot of miles on that thing.

Do you have a favorite candy? Jax: Let’s go with Peach Rings.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Jax: I like to go golfing when I can and if we’re not rodeoing, we will just go drive around the new cities we are in. What’s your favorite holiday? Jax: Christmas would be my favorite holiday because we get to celebrate Jesus. What type of music do you like listening to? Jax: Country music is definitely my go-to whenever I’m listening to music. Right now, my favorite band is probably Treaty Oak Revival.

McMillan named 2024 Linderman Award recipient

The PRCA Linderman Award is one of the most prestigious in PRORODEO. It recognizes a cowboy who won at least $1,000 in three events, including at least one roughstock and one timed event. The 2024 winner is Caleb McMillan after an exceptional season in which he took home at least $2,000 in four events. “This is really cool,” McMillan, 26, told the ProRodeo Sports News . “I’ve come close a few times but never got it done. This is my first time and it’s quite an honor. There are a lot of good cowboys (who’ve won the Linderman) that I’ve looked up to my whole life while rodeoing: Phil Lyne, the Whitakers, and Josh Frost.” The Soap Lake, Wash., cowboy finished the season with

$31,267 in bull riding, $9,080 in tie-down roping, $7,322 in steer wrestling and $2,168 in steer roping. “It’s the work in both ends of the

arena,” he said. “You don’t see that hardly at all anymore. I know back in the day, it was a big deal and there were a lot of guys who did it. But now there’s not very many.” McMillan missed out on qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. However, he will travel to Las Vegas this December to receive the award during Round 7 at the Thomas & Mack Center. McMillian

Thurston nabs fifth straight CFR title There’s no ‘whoa’ in the stellar career of Zeke Thurston. Chalk up another significant on Calgary Stampede’s Freedom Express. He followed that up with a Round 3 victory with a 90-point trip on Duane Kesler’s Miscreant. Then to put the icing on the

win as the Big Valley, Alberta, talent collected his fifth straight Canadian saddle bronc championship during the $1.5 million Canadian Finals Rodeo on Oct. 6. He’s the first saddle bronc rider to accomplish such a feat in Canadian rodeo history.

cake, Thurston matched up with another Stampede horse, Tokyo Bubbles, for an outstanding

92.75-point trip and his third go round buckle, paving the way for the championship title. “Each one is honestly more special,” said Thurston, 30. “They’re hard to come by, and to have it happen this many times in a row is unbelievable.” Thurston earned $41,411 over the CFR with 432.25 points on five horses, pushing his Canadian season earnings to $100,215.

Thurston came into the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary by returning to its original home of Edmonton, Alberta, with a $6,000 lead in season earnings over his next closest rival, Lucas Macza. Thurston opened up his drive for five with a first-round win, racking up 89.25-point ride

PERMIT FINALS

Legacy Continued

Kooper Heimburg keeps Missouri Valley relevant BY ALEX DODD T he Missouri Valley College rodeo program has developed a reputation in the PRORODEO world, mainly due to its knack for producing top-level bareback riders. Distinguished Viking alumni include three-time world champion Tim O’Connell, 2022 champ Jess Pope and eight-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Tanner Aus. Another Missouri Valley College phenom may be on the horizon in PRORODEO after Kooper Heimburg earned the bareback riding title at the PRCA Permit Finals on Oct. 6 in Waco, Texas, with 247.5 points on three head. “My coach (at Missouri Valley College) Ken Mason is a really good guy and he’s really good on the bareback riding,” Heimburg told the ProRodeo Sports News . “And I have to thank him for a lot of the ways that I think.” Heimburg earned $15,060 on his permit to qualify for the culminating event from Oct. 4-6 at the Extraco Center. The Marshall, Mo., cowboy said college rodeo at Missouri Valley College and the mentorship provided by some of PRORODEO’s best prepared him for the ups and downs of his permit season. “Jess (Pope), Tim (O’Connell) and Tanner Aus came out of (MVC) and I got really close with them by going to school there,” Heimburg said. “They’re always by my side if I need anything, and they taught me a lot along the way too.” Heimburg opened the permit finals with a Round 1 win thanks to an 84.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s R. Watson’s Scarlette to pick up $1,042 out of the gate. He followed with a 78-point ride in Round 2. In the final go-round, Heimburg delivered an 85-point trip to earn an additional $782 and clinch the average title. “It was really exciting,” he said of the event. “It was a really cool rodeo that they put on for us. And I was out most of the summer due to an injury, but I’m glad that I was able to come here and dominate when I could.” Heimburg’s average win bested second-place finisher Tuker Carricato (246.5 points on three head) to earn $1,535. Winners at the PRCA Permit Finals also received an automatic bid to compete at RodeoHouston from March 4-23, 2025. The upcoming edition of the event will pay out more than $2.5 Million. “It’s a really big deal,” Heimburg said. “I’ve always dreamed of riding there. And the PRCA giving us that opportunity is a really big deal, and it’s really exciting to me.”

Big rides propel Mize to circuit title Hot Start RAM TEXAS CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO

BY ALEX RILEY, Special to ProRodeo Sports News T ristan Mize could have let the first outcome at the RAM Texas Circuit Finals impact his overall performance. Facing off with High Class, a bull from Lancaster & Cude Pro Rodeo, Mize was bucked off to start competition, setting an inauspicious tone – one that the Bryan, Texas, product quickly bounced back from. “When you’ve got four of them to get on, you can’t really let one of them take you out of it,” Mize said. Mize rebounded from the opening round disappointment to post back-to-back high scoring efforts in the second and third go-rounds, leading to an aggregate total of 172 points on two head. That proved to be just enough to take care of business at the four-day circuit finale, with Mize finishing a half-point ahead of Hayden Ferguson to claim the Texas Circuit championship, earning himself $9,032 in prize money. Mize’s resurgence started with a little redemption in the second go. Back in March, he drew Stockyards Pro Rodeo’s Cheddar Biscuit at the Ellis County Stock Show and Rodeo in Waxahachie, Texas, resulting in a no-score after getting bucked off. Knowing that a rematch was looming, Mize honed in and came up with an 86.5-point effort to place second in the round and get things rolling in Waco. “He’s a really good bull and everybody gets along with him really good, so I knew I had a good chance on him,” Mize said. “I had been on him once and he put me down – but I knew I could get some revenge on him. I reckon we’re even now.” In the third go, Mize came up big again, going for 85.5 points against United Pro Rodeo’s Back Bender to once again place runner-up in the round. Mize was unable to cover his fourth-round bull and Ferguson made it interesting by scoring 88 points on his last ride, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the longtime PRORODEO competitor as he claimed his first circuit championship. The win gives Mize a head start on 2025 after a return to the PRCA last year. He ended the 2024 campaign with a little more than $65,000 in earnings to finish 38th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Now, he’s got significant money to his ledger before the calendar flips to a new year, along with a guaranteed spot at the NFR Open in July 2025. Between now and then, Mize plans to continue adding to his winnings, with a focus on being in contention for his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge next December. The outcome in Texas certainly helped bolster his confidence to get the job done. “I think everybody wants to kind of start the year off at the circuit finals because it pays pretty good compared to the other rodeos this time of year,” Mize said. “It’s definitely helpful to get that good of a start early on in the year and get some money won off the bat.”
