IN HIS WORDS LOGAN MEDLIN Heeler follows in father’s footsteps to Finals S he (Kamryn) is awesome. It’s been a good year inside the arena, but none of it as good as the blessing we got having her. She’s been by far the best thing.
Navigating Insurance Can Be a Bumpy Ride. that the NFR is not at Las Vegas. I haven’t looked at it that way. Obviously, it’s different from what I thought it would be while I was growing up. But it’ll be cool to look back in 20 years knowing only 15 teams roped in Globe Life Field and I was one of them. can still pick his brain on what I need to work on. It’s definitely a team deal. I was born the first year he made it and I was 5 the second year he made it. I remember going out there and him practicing and in the grand entry practice getting to ride around with him in the arena before the rodeo started. They said I fell asleep every night before My good horse, Drago, 11, (2020 winner of the team roping heeling Purina Horse of the Year presented by AQHA) is just simple, he’s easy. He’s real forgiving, doesn’t take anything away from you. He’s always looking to please. I think that we (Crawford and I) had actually been friends before he and I started roping. He’s a guy that turns a lot of steers, rides good horses and sets steers up good for me to throw fast. As the heeler, it’s a lot more fun when you get to throw a lot. He turned a lot of steers this year. It allows me to get in a groove when I can throw often. I’m excited. Some people asked me if I’m bummed the rodeo ended.
Team roping heeler Logan Medlin is headed to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Well, his first as a competitor. Medlin’s father qualified for the Finals in 1991 and 1996, and Medlin attended both, first as a baby, then as a 5-year-old. Medlin finished the 2020 regular season ninth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. The Tatum, N.M., cowboy earned $54,621 while roping with header Charly Crawford. Medlin, 29, nearly qualified in 2016 but finished 17th in the standings that season. He and Breely, his wife of seven years, had their first child this year, daughter, Kamryn.
It’s a sigh of relief to make the Finals. It’s been a goal of mine since I was a little kid. At the same time, I can’t be too satisfied, I still have goals I set for myself that I want to accomplish. It’s cool I can look back and say I met that goal of mine, but I have to stay motivated and hungry because if you’re not hungry and working toward that, somebody else is, and you’ll get passed by. It’s the truth. There are so many people that rope good these days that if you’re not going to be working as hard as you can at it, somebody else is. Obviously, there’s a group of guys that make the Finals every year, but then there are half a dozen spots that fluctuate every year and that’s proof of it, that so many guys rope good. You’re never guaranteed you’re going to make it again, so keep your head down and work at it if you want to come back. My dad (Jeff ) taught me everything. He’s who I looked up to when I first started. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be just like him. That’s what gave me the idea and drive to rodeo for a living because that’s what he did. I still call him up and talk with him about my roping. I

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
What was your experience like competing in the PRCA in 2020? Jacob: It was crazy because you didn’t really expect that everything would be shut down (in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Still, it wasn’t terrible being my first year because I was healthy, and I was able to do pretty well. What was your biggest win of the season? Jacob: I took first at the (Rodeo Rapid City, S.D.) PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match (Feb. 8), and I won some pretty good money ($4,250). That win made me feel like I belonged and I could rodeo and do something with it. I know (for the 2021) season I want to go full time. What rodeo is on your bucket list to compete at? Jacob: Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up. That grass looks pretty cool, and I would love to compete there. How did you get involved with rodeo? Jacob Kammerer, 23, of Philip, S.D., just completed his PRCA rookie season in saddle bronc riding. He finished 42nd in the 2020 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $14,421. After proving he could compete against the best saddle bronc riders in the world, Kammerer is ready to hit the trail full time in 2021 and see where he can end up.
JACOB KAMMERER
Jacob: My dad (Joel) and older brother (Wyatt) were saddle bronc riders and a bunch of people around (Philip, S.D.) were rodeoing all the time. It’s kind of a rodeo community. When I was younger, the roughstock end of the arena is what I really leaned to, especially saddle bronc riding. Did you have any other brothers and sisters? Jacob: Yes. My oldest brother is named Ryan and I have a younger sister, Bobbi Jo, who is a senior in high school. Did you do any other events growing up? Jacob: I did everything in high school except for bull riding and bareback riding. When I was a senior in high school, I won state in team roping, steer wrestling and bronc riding. I was a team roping heeler. There was just something about saddle bronc riding that made me want to do it more than anything else. Did you have any rodeo idols growing up? Jacob: Everybody who rides bucking horses looks up to the Etbauers or the Elsheres. A couple guys who helped me out a bunch were Mike Heathershaw and my rodeo coach at Gillette (Wyo.) College (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Marvin Garrett. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing?
Jacob: I love doing any type of outdoor activities. I love being outside and being a cowboy. I mostly go hunting for deer. I also enjoy fishing. I also do a lot of ranching and fencing. I do a lot of custom fencing for (saddle bronc rider) Ty Manke. That helps keep me going down the road. If cellphones didn’t exist how would that impact you? Jacob: It would definitely make it harder to rodeo. We would have to get out the old maps. Then, I would have to use a payphone to enter rodeos. I’ve never used a payphone. What’s your favorite holiday? Jacob: I would say New Year’s Eve or Christmas. I enjoy being around family for the holidays. What’s your favorite movie? Jacob: The Cowboys with John Wayne. I always watched that when I was a little kid with my dad and my grandpa (Marvin). There was something about it that made me want to be a cowboy even more. Do you binge-watch shows on Netflix? Jacob: I watched a little bit of Tiger King , but it didn’t take me long to shut it off. The show I like the most right now is Yellowstone . What’s the last concert you attended? Jacob: I think it was The Band Perry. That was like three years ago. I didn’t really like listening to them on the radio, but in concert they were pretty good.
What’s your go-to restaurant? Jacob: I would have to say Buffalo Wild Wings. They’re good everywhere you go. What type of candy do you like? Jacob: I’m not a big candy guy, but I will get Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups now and then. What was your favorite cartoon to watch as a kid? Jacob: Tom and Jerry.

RAM CALIFORNIA CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO
Permit holder wins title in sixth rodeo Quick Study BY TRACY RENCK I t didn’t take long for permit holder Karson Mebane to celebrate his first PRCA victory. In his sixth career ProRodeo competition, the saddle bronc

rider from Bakersfield, Calif., won the two-head average with 168.5 points at the RAMCalifornia Circuit Finals Rodeo in Red Bluff, Oct. 10. “It was pretty wild,” said Mebane, 20. “I had never been to Red Bluff before, and it was awesome to get to compete at (Frank Moore Arena). My nerves were probably better because there wasn’t a huge crowd there. It was tough to go to rodeos this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was great just to get to compete at a circuit finals and especially win.” In the first round, Mebane had an 81-point ride on Bridwell Pro Rodeos’ Beaver Bend to split second. The final round was an eight-second trip Mebane won’t soon forget. He had a career-best 87.5-point ride on Four Star Rodeo’s WatchThis to win the final round and the average. “The ride on Beaver Bend was nice and easy,” Mebane said. “She jumped and kicked underneath me, and she had a lot of hang time. My ride onWatchThis was a little more difficult. I heard about that horse, and it was supposed to take a little scoot and stay in one spot and buck. “She took that little scoot right out of there, but when she broke, she jumped to the right and tipped me into my left stirrup. It was a knife fight to get back into the right stirrup and just keep my feet rolling. It was a lot of fun and that horse really bucked.” Mebane was the last guy to ride, so when he saw the numbers on the scoreboard he was elated. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Mebane, who earned $3,993. “I’ve seen all these guys ride and I’ve looked up to them all, and I couldn’t believe I just accomplished something like that. It was a great feeling.” When Mebane isn’t competing on the PRCA circuit, he attends Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and competes on the rodeo team. Mebane is majoring in agricultural systems management. “It a hybrid of ag engineering and ag business,” Mebane said. “… I would really like to work with water systems. I’m getting my minor in ag business. “I’m going to finish school. I have two years left and might do the master’s program here at Cal Poly and keep rodeoing in college. When the time comes and I’m out of college eligibility I would love to make a run at the (Wrangler) NFR and see if I have what it takes.” Mebane’s family runs a cattle ranch in Bakersfield, but he didn’t get involved with rodeo until high school. “I started out team roping as a heeler, and I thought it was something we did on the ranch and I really got into,” Mebane said. “My sophomore year of high school I started riding broncs and I fell in love with it.” Mebane is thrilled to have the opportunity to compete at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., April 9-10. “I’ve never been to Florida, and I haven’t thought about the actual experience yet, but being able to be at that level with guys who have competed at the NFR and horses that have been to the NFR is something I’m excited for,” Mebane said. “I have to put the work in from here until then and keep my head on straight while I’m there. If I do those things, I think I can do pretty well.”

$12,260 The amount of money earned in the team roping by members of the Mi- nor family. Members of the Ellens- burg Rodeo Hall of Fame, the Minors claimed the top two honors in the average, as brothers Riley and Brady beat out cousin Jake and his partner, Garrett Rogers. Cousin Jason, the 2019 Columbia River Circuit All-Around Cowboy, picked up some round money with partner Jordan Tye, as the Minors filled half the money-winning positions in their signature event.
IN BRIEF
MOVES ON Dallee Mason didn’t let the disappoint- ment of missing the 2020 Wrangler NFR by $5,800 linger for long. Just three days after concluding the 2020 season in 17th, the bull rider rode two tough draws in Hermiston, winning the average by 15 points and putting $3,370 toward the 2021 world standings.
COMMITTEES RALLY Despite having just two rodeos in 2020, the Columbia River Circuit Board rallied the rodeo community to put together the 2020 RAM Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo. Many of the committees, most who were forced to cancel their 2020 shows, pitched in. Sponsors stepped up with support and the RAM CRCFR was a success, paying out nearly $100,000 and allowing circuit competitors a chance to get a jump on the 2021 PRCA | RAM world standings.

Trenten Montero cruises to victory close to family ranch At Home TOP SCORES
TOP MONEY WINNER Bo Pickett, tie- down roper, took home $4,289 BAREBACK RIDING
BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News F or bareback rider Trenten Montero, the Columbia River Circuit is ideal. It was his first choice as a professional thanks to its proximity to his family’s ranch 90 miles north of Winnemucca, Nev. “I like rodeoing up there,” Montero said. “They have these huge arenas and the people there really love rodeo. And I enjoy getting to get on big strong horses.” After a brief stint in the Turquoise Circuit while at NewMexico State University – when he also went to three College National Finals Rodeos in bareback riding and bull riding –Montero moved to Billings, Mont., but returned to his first circuit. It wasn’t easy being a Columbia River Circuit cowboy in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the cancellation of all but two rodeos. Despite the challenges, the circuit board, with help from rodeo committees, mustered together a finals event in the new location of Hermiston, Ore. “It was a lot of fun,” Montero said. “They had some great horses for us to get on, and it was awesome that they were able to pull that rodeo together so quickly.” After 16 seconds of work in Hermiston, Montero is making plans for another trip to the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2021. He won both rounds of the 2020 RAMColumbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo en route to a 20-point victory in the average and a second consecutive year-end championship. Montero had a rematch with Big Bend Rodeo’s Moon Shadow in the first round and joked that he often can’t remember horses he rode the previous week. In the second go, he drew Dakota Pride from Corey & Lange Rodeo, a horse voted the Bareback Horse of the RAM CRCFR. “That was a different type of horse, a lot of power and really rapid,” Montero said. “He got a lot of jumps in the eight seconds.” The ride was worth 82 points but after the whistle left something to be desired. “I sat up too quick and my heels clicked, and I was in trouble,” said Montero, who hung up and ended up getting stepped on before getting away. “I help out with bareback schools, and one thing I always tell the students is that the ride isn’t over until you get off on the pickup man,” he said, “or you’ll end up banged up, and it puts a damper on your season.” Luckily, Montero escaped relatively unscathed, and the $3,781 won sets him up nicely in the early 2021 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. “I was excited to crack back out and get a win,” said Montero, who competed at his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2019 but finished 29th in 2020. “It feels good when you’ve had a rough year. “The nice thing about rodeo is that the season ends Sept. 30 and the new one starts Oct. 1 so you don’t get to dwell on anything, you just get right back into it.”
