Etcheverry wins average title just like his father Like Father, Like Son BY TRACY RENCK T ie-down roper John Pete Etcheverry followed in his father’s footsteps to victory at the RAMTurquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo. With a time of 29.1 seconds, Etcheverry won the three-head average at the RAMTurquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo, in Prescott Valley, Ariz., Oct. 6. “It felt so awesome to win,” said John Pete, 37. “This has been a goal of mine for a long time to win the average (and go to the RAMNCFR). I’m excited to have this happen. Being an average champion at the Turquoise Circuit Finals with my dad makes this extra special.” Etcheverry, who joined the PRCA in 2004, shared the news with his father via phone.

“I usually talk to him after every run wherever I’m at,” Etcheverry said. “He was super pumped and proud of me when I called and told him I won. That meant a lot to me.” Etcheverry earned $4,488 for his performance.

Back in 1979, John C. Etcheverry accomplished the same feat. This is the first time John Pete has qualified for the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo after competing in the RAMTurquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo for nearly a decade.
