EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK Steer ropers ready to put on show at NFSR in Kansas

T he 2021 National Finals Steer Roping is fast approaching. The event takes Nov. 12-13 at the Kansas Star Arena with a purse of $447,500. One thing is for sure, there will not be a repeat champion. The King of Cowboys Trevor Brazile won the last two NFSR world championships to eight (2006-07, 2011, 2013-15, 2019-20). Brazile has retired from competitive competition and that opens the door for the likes of Cole Patterson, Scott Snedecor and Vin Fisher Jr. to snare a gold buckle. Since 2005, three cowboys have combined to win all the gold buckles – Brazile, Rocky Patterson (2009-10. 2012, 2016), and Snedecor (2005, 2008, 2017-18). The last time Brazile didn’t compete at the NFSR was in 2016 and that year Rocky Patterson was the champ. Snedecor acknowledged not competing against Brazile, who he finished second to a year ago, does offer a different wrinkle. “It doesn’t change my mindset (that Trevor will not be there),” Snedecor said. “But I did like the concept of when we got there it was one-on-one. It was me and Trevor pretty much. Not taking anything away from the other guys, but at the end of the day it was me and him and we knew that. It was a lot of fun. Through the years he was my main competition over and over here in the last 10 years and we both knew that going into that deal that we were supposed to be the last two standing.” With Brazile out, Snedecor is not changing his game plan. “I’m going in it just like he was still there,” Brazile said. “I’m going in

there to try and win what I can on every steer I run in that building. The building, the setup, everything is fun. The steers are conditioned good. The arena conditions are great. It’s just a fun setup for me. I just enjoy the atmosphere and the smaller, go fast, kind of deal. I really like it when you put me in a confined area right there in a pressure-packed situation. It is a lot of fun for me.” Vin Fisher, who heads to the NFSR for the 18th time, is aware of the Brazile factor as well. Fisher Jr., who is still searching for his first gold buckle, finished second to Brazile in the world standings in 2015 and 2019. “I had not really thought about Trevor not being there,” Fisher Jr. said. “I will say there have probably been times in the past where there was no doubt, I knew about Trevor being there because even some of the years he has beat me I went in a spot or so ahead of him. Having to watch him rope right before you (in Mulvane) is just …. He just dominates round after round after round after round. You definitely see that and maybe take a little more aggressive start. There’s no doubt he made you up your game every time he nodded. He was just a machine there. It didn’t matter where he was in the average, he was still going to tie fast steers.” Fisher Jr. is grateful he’s still qualifying and competing at the NFSR with the exponential increase in the purse. “Having that money to run at has made our Finals grow so much,” Fisher Jr. said. “When they upped the money in

2015, that was actually the year I went in first and man my lead was gone in two rounds. It completely changed the game of steer roping where you don’t have to go in first to the finals and you still have a great chance to win.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Eli: Growing up my dad and my uncle always roped, and I’ve just always been around it. But to tell you the truth I never had much interest in it until I got into high school. Then it took off for me after that point. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Eli: Going to roping events and actually being able to compete and draw a check here and there. That right there is what told me I could compete with them. And once I figured out, I could compete with them I wasn’t scared to go out there and enter anywhere against them. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Eli: Everyone I know down here does tie-down roping. That’s what I’ve always done. All the rodeo resources I have and the people around me rope calves. I think one of the things that drew me to it is because it’s all on me and my horse. I don’t have to depend on someone else doing their job as well. What was this past season like for you? Eli: It was an awesome season for me, I felt like I learned a ton. I went to Woodward (Okla.) on my permit and won second. It gave me a little bit of money to go out and rodeo. Then I was able to put it all together and qualify for the circuit finals. I can’t wait to get out there this upcoming season. Why did you decide to get your permit last year? Eli: It seemed everyone was hounding me to get it and I thought I might as well. My plan was to go to five or 10 rodeos close to home and see if I could make the circuit finals. It all just worked out and I ended up making it my first year. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Eli: I did team roping for a while, but I never enjoyed it quite as much as tie-down roping. I did a little bit of it in college and that’s about it. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Eli: I’ve always liked watching Trevor Brazile not only because he ropes so good, but his horsemanship is outstanding. He gets the most out of his horses no matter what event he’s competing in. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Rookie tie-down roper Eli Barger, 21, purchased his PRCA permit in May, with hopes of making a splash in ProRodoeo. He wasted no time making his impact felt, he brought home $5,114 from Woodward, Okla. in his second PRCA rodeo. The Anadarko, Okla., cowboy, qualified for his first RAM Prairie Circuit Finals in October and took home the average title with 32.4 seconds on three head.

ELI BARGER

Eli: I’m going to go enter the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo next summer and that’s one rodeo I’ve always watched. So, it would be a dream come true to win there, I’m really looking forward to it. What’s your go-to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Eli: Any kind of Mexican food, I absolutely love Mexican food. Chicken enchiladas are my go-to dish. What’s your go-to movie or TV-show? Eli: I would have to say Longmire is probably my favorite TV series, The Cowboys with John Wayne is my favorite movie. What was the make of your first car? Eli: It was a 1997 Chevrolet Z71, I still drive it every now and then. I think it has around 230,000 miles on it. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing for fun? Eli: I love to hunt and fish anytime I can. Before I started roping, I was

always outside doing something. What’s your favorite holiday? Eli: I’d probably have to say Christmas, my birthday is right around then as well. So, I get to celebrate a little bit of everything. What type of music do you like listening to? Eli: I’d say mainly country music, but I’ll listen to just about anything going down the road to keep me sane.

Teton Ridge new presenting sponsor of Wrangler NFR Partnership

T he Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association®, and Teton Ridge Oct. 28 announced a multi-year deal for Teton Ridge to become the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Teton Ridge is a brand dedicated to promoting and preserving iconic western culture. Since 1985, Las Vegas has played host to the NFR, except for 2020 when the NFR was moved to Arlington, Texas, because of COVID-19 restrictions in place in Las Vegas. The NFR is a culmination of more than 600 PRCA-sanctioned events within the regular season. Las Vegas

PRCA World Champion crowning ceremony. “A PRCA world title received at the NFR is one of the most treasured achievements in rodeo,” Teton Ridge CEO Jonathan Katz said. “Celebrating champions and the hard work that goes into rising to the top levels of each rodeo discipline is at the core of Teton Ridge. Aligning with PRCA and LVE as part of this iconic year- end event, we want to join them in honoring western sports and the tremendous professionals competing for world titles in a very prestigious way.” The partnership comes on the heels

Events, the special events coordinator for the rodeo, projects 17,000 people in attendance at every performance at the Thomas & Mack Center, or 170,000 total. The total estimated economic impact of the NFR was more than $175 million in 2019 according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “This is great to partner with Teton Ridge as the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. “It’s extremely pleasing when you can partner with an organization whose beliefs align with ours. We look forward to this being a great relationship moving forward.” Emphasizing the same commitment to excellence that is exhibited in all Teton Ridge’s integrations, the dedicated western- preservation brand will place a special focus on elevating the

of Teton Ridge’s recent move to bring The American under the brand’s umbrella and elevate the richest single-day rodeo in the world to new levels in March 2022 in Arlington, Texas, including an unmatched total purse of more than $3 million, non-stop rodeo action, live music, entertainment and more. The industry-leading event is the centerpiece of the brand’s western sports portfolio. Adding the NFR partnership was a natural next step for Teton Ridge and further illustrates the significance placed on celebrating excellence at the top levels of the rodeo world. His first came in 2019, then the honor was not awarded in 2020. He said it’s an award he shoots for every season, but it was more difficult than ever in 2021. “Every year I set out with the goal of being in the running for the Linderman Award,” Frost said. Frost is the second member of his family to capture the distinguished Linderman Award, his older brother, Joe, 27, captured the award in 2014.

Josh Frost named 2021 Linderman Award winner The PRCA Linderman Award is one of the most

prestigious awards in ProRodeo. It recognizes a cowboy who won at least $1,000 in three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock and one timed event. The 2021 Linderman Award winner is Randlett, Utah, cowboy Josh Frost. This past season Frost earned $130,192 in bull riding, $4,110 in tie-down roping, and another $1,070 in the steer wrestling. He said it’s an award he holds near and dear to his heart. “It means a lot to me, I think it’s the most cowboy award we have in the sport of ProRodeo,” said Frost, a two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “You have to compete

Prairie Circuit Finals in Duncan, Okla., Oct. 16. The 26-year-old won the average with 243 points on three head. In the final performance of the rodeo, Rutland faced off with Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em knowing he had to ride to capture the title. He wasted no time taking advantage of the opportunity delivering a 77-point ride to cap off an $8,635 weekend. “It means a lot for the fact that I had won it in 2019, then in 2020 I didn’t even come close to making the (Circuit) Finals,” said Rutland, a two-time National Circuit Finals Rodeo qualifier. “So, to be able to pull everything back together and get back to the basics and come back here and stay on all three again feels really good.” The win didn’t come without consequences. Rutland was stepped on by the bull after his final ride and suffered two fractured ribs and a bruised kidney. He knows in this sport risk and reward sometimes go hand in hand. “I’m thinking I probably have to take a little time off this fall, but I should be perfectly fine,” Rutland says. “I kind of just went into it (the final round) with the same mindset I had all weekend and that was just stay on no matter what it took. When it comes down to it in that type of situation you just have to hang on to them to get the job done.” While he will have to take a little time off Rutland said this is the start he was looking for headed into 2022. This past season he finished 37th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, the highest finish he’s had in his five-year ProRodeo career. “With this money counting towards the world standings that’s going to help me out tremendously this year,” he said. “I learned a lot this past season that’s for sure. So, I’m really looking forward to the 2022 season. I think I’m starting to figure things out, I mean you never stop learning in this sport, but I’m excited to see what happens going forward.” Now his focus shifts to putting it all together as he continues to chase his first National Finals Rodeo bid. “This was my way of setting my feet enough to make it a good winter,” Rutland said. “Now I just need to take advantage of those opportunities.”

RAM COLUMBIA CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO

Home Cookin’ BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News E ven in rodeo, home-field advantage is a thing. As proof, look no further than Austin Foss’ success over the years at the RAM Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo in Redmond, Ore. Already a several time winner of the season ending championship for rodeos in Oregon andWashington, Foss added

BRUNO SOARS Saddle bronc rider Kade Bruno dominated the RAM CRCFR, winning second in the first two rounds before sealing the average win with a monster 90-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Wrangler NFR horse Major Huckleberry in the third go. Bruno collected $6,507 to also cinch the year-end championship.

another victory on Oct. 23, after posting 237.5 points on three horses. He collected $4,790, enough to help him clinch his second year-end title for the Columbia River Circuit as well. “I actually graduated high school in that building,” Foss said with a laugh of the First Interstate Bank Center. He grew up, and still lives, in Terrebonne, just 10 minutes away. “It was great to get to sleep in your own bed each night.” The RAMColumbia River CFR was staged in Hermiston, Ore., last season and had been in Yakima, Wash., for a few years prior to that. Foss was happy to have it back to its long-time home in Central Oregon. “The entire atmosphere was so amazing. You knew a good time was back in town,” Foss said. “I’d love to see it there forever, it’s a great venue. The people behind the scenes worked so hard to bring it back.” The four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bareback rider got on a trio of seasoned bucking horses en route to his victory. He had a 75-point ride in the opening round aboard Corey & Lange’s Unlucky, the only round in which he failed to earn a check. Things got rolling in round two when he rode Big Bend’s Moon Shadow to 79.5 points to take second place. “I’ve been on Moon Shadow several times . . . I won Othello (Wash.) and placed several times on that horse over the years. He’s a nice one.” In the final round, Foss drew another familiar foe in Big Bend Rodeo’s Dunny. “(Rodeo announcer) Steve Kenyon asked me if I knew that horse prior to the final round and I told him, we went to college together because I’ve been getting on him since I was in college!” Foss said. Calling him “buckier than most,” Foss had an 83-point ride to win the final round, his highest score aboard the horse. He captured the average over 2020 winner Trenten Montero by a point and a half. The win sends Foss to the recently announced NFR Open powered by RAM, formerly known as the National Circuit Finals Rodeo, to compete in Colorado Springs, Colo., in July for a share of the $1 million total payout. “It’s good, all the money that’s there,” he said. “It’s closer for me to drive which is good. I don’t fly much anymore.” Foss finished the 2021 season 28th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings after battling herniated discs in his back which plagued the latter half of his season. “It was pretty painful,” Foss said. “I got some shots in mid-August, took some time off.” The rest allowed him to return strong, winning Lakeview (Ore.) and sharing the win at the Washington State Fair Pro Rodeo in Puyallup down the stretch before the circuit finals win.
